The Mississippi River

The Mississippi River

The ice-cold water

Stings my skin

As I plunge

Into the blue-green.

It is dark,

but I still swim.

Deeper and deeper

Into the unknown.

I am almost there,

I just know it!

But my lungs burn

I need oxygen, desperately.

The pain is agonizing,

Almost distracting!

But deeper and deeper

I swim.

My head throbs

From the pressure

Of the water

As it strangles its next victim.

My eyes stay shut

From fear of what might be

Lurking, watching me as I swim

Deeper and deeper.

I have to keep going,

I can't stop here,

I am on a mission

Thump.

My feet plummet into the soft sand

I made it. I open my eyes

Into the unkown,

For I cannot stay long.
