Chapter 2 🌲Kenzie's POV🌲
1 Month Later
It had been about a month after The Games and I still hadn't talked to Kendall. If we were going to do something we needed to do it soon. I had sent her a letter weeks ago. Well maybe today Id get something back. I ran to the mailbox and pulled out the mail. There it was. A letter signed Kendall Vertes. Once back inside, I dropped the rest of the mail on the counter and carried my letter to my bedroom. I locked the door and pulled it out of its white envelope. The paper was flimsy and pale. Practically see-through. I read over it.
Dear Mackenzie,
Sorry it took me so long to respond. I want to make a change and we only have 11 months. I'm determined. I have a lot of work at my house and I may take awhile to respond again. Hope your doing well! Can't believe just a month ago we were fighting to the death. I consider you my best friend. You stuck with me the whole way through and we came out winners. Unfortunately 24 kids didn't. Last month when I came home Lincoln's mother talked to me. She asked me how he had died. The sadness in her eyes broke my heart. I don't want that to happen again. I don't want to tell another woman how her child died. Hope to see you soon!

I pulled out a fresh sheet of paper and a pen and started writing back.
Dear Kendall,
Daniels mother asked me the same thing. Well almost the same. It broke my heart to tell her. We do need to make a difference! I have a lot of work around here as well. I consider you my best friend too. I'm doing well hope you are too! Keep in touch.

I liked how she signed hers. I signed it the same then folded the letter and placed it in an envelope. Mine was much shorter but it got the point across. I stuffed the letter in my pocket for safe-keeping. I left my bedroom and in my living room were men in black. Dozens. My family gathered around confused. One man grabbed my shoulder. "Does this look familiar?" he sneered, waving a copy of my first letter in my face. || More
