Noel's POV

No.... No. This can't be happening. It should've been me. I should've turned her away from it all.

I stared down at my mates limp body, her legs both burnt, the stench of her burnt flesh filling my nose and driving my wolf crazy. He wanted blood.

She hadn't responded to any of my words but she's still breathing. I vaguely heard someone call 911 behind me as I tried to recall what had happened.

I'd walked inside the library and called her name, moments later I found her and immediately noticed the elevated portion of carpet she was standing on.
She'd told me to leave because she was fine and wanted everyone else to be safe but I practically ignored her as I stepped forward to examine the bomb. It wasn't an accident that it was planted here but I didn't know enough about bombs to disable it.

Instead I'd focused on my mate, gently hugging her around her waist and explaining vaguely that it was going to hurt. My plan was to jump back and right out of the window before the bomb exploded but she stumbled instead of jumped and it threw me off, causing me to stumble. Shortly after that her scream pierced my ears and I noticed her flinging her leg around wildly, trying to get the flames to extinguish before they could do much damage.

Before I could blame myself more the paramedics arrived and quickly put May on a stretcher, allowing me to ride in the ambulance with them to hopefully keep her calm if she were to wake up. Which she didn't. Not on the ride to the hospital, not while they were wheeling her away, not while they got her stable and not even after they'd allowed me in to sit with her.

I sat in a chair beside her bed, holding her hand and rubbing the back of it worriedly when a doctor walked in with a clipboard.

"Are you related to this girl?"
"No sir, not biologically anyway."
"Well neither of you have rings so I'm assuming mates then?"

I swiveled my head to look at him real fast, surprised.

"How...?" He chuckled at my reaction and studied her.
"Well, I'm a werewolf and I can smell it on you. Even if I couldn't I'm sure I would be able to tell the way you're very protective of her."
I just nodded softly, I guess it made sense, his scent was different then May's or other humans.

"is she going to be ok?"
"she should be. The burns are severe so we're not sure if she'll walk again, and apparently," he moved up her shirt sleeves a little to show bruises. "She's been abused. There are numerous scars on her back as well, most of which are scabbed over or healed. Even if she does make it I'm not sure when she'll wake up, her body needs time to heal."

I sighed heavily, keeping my wolf back. He was beyond pissed that someone had touched our mate, let alone abused her. That could explain her exhaustion though, her being in too much pain to sleep or her being too scared to sleep.

"There's another thing." The doctor added softly, frowning at his papers.
"Yes?"
"....... Have you guys....... Done...... y'know, 'it'?" I frowned softly.

I mean yeah, but we used protection. Didn't we?
Dude, you were in some random guys office with the intention of getting a briefcase, not having sex with your mate. Trust me when I say protection was literally the las thing on your mind.
Crap!

"............... please don't say it................"

"Im sorry to say that............ this young woman............. Who is currently in a coma for the foreseeable future.................. is pregnant............."

And then I felt like my world was crashing down. Everything falling along with it. I had a child in her stomach, I was the father. This information only made me angrier, especially at the person who planted the bomb. They endangered my mate and unborn child. I haven't even met the little guy, but I already loved him and I could tell my wolf was already extremely protective of him. Or her for that matter.
