“What?”Zachary dropped his eyes on his laps. Avoiding her stare or glare or just her, was a much safer option.
“Wait, what?” Sasha repeated. Her voice impatient and begging for an explanation. “What do you mean?”
“Uh well,”
“Stop fumbling and answer my question.” Her patience was running thin. So thin and low and she could burst any moment with rage, confusion, irritation and he was silent. For a second or two and then he spoke up.
“You…I just — they asked me and I…I was worried and said yes but-”
“No,” Sasha interrupted, her voice colder than before. “You took pity and thought the so-called engagement would make me forget everything. You think you can buy my emotions. Buy them and shrink them to no-life. To save her.” Her voice was full of accusation.
“No, Lady Castina that’s not what I-”
“Then what? Did I look so pathetic that you thought you could buy my life and cage me? Do you think I need you ?”
Zachary clenched his jaw, his eyes momentarily hardening. “Yes. Pathetic. You are stuck in the past. Still rotting and regretting and crying. Willing to die for those who hurt you. Willing to leave the ones who love you. I didn’t buy your life and neither do I want to cage you. I’m sure you don't need me, but I need you. I need you to stop and live. Look around,” He pointed at the carriage window which was overlooking the green farms of the Empire, rolling down silently. “You can have a better life ahead.”
Green farms, sunlight and cold concrete. Happy children and emotionless guards. Hand in hand and handcuffs. Cottages and prisons. Sasha could see two different worlds altogether. The one she had and the one she could never have. “My life will never get any better.” She stated absently.
The ride was silent. He didn’t speak, she didn’t look. After a while, Sasha spoke.
“Where are we going?”
“To your palace, My Lady.” Sasha glanced at him. He was suddenly being formal. She didn’t say anything.
The carriage rolled down to The Castina palace after fifteen minutes. Sasha looked down at her worn out dress and attempted to brush it. Her clothes were dirty and the last thing she wanted was her parents to see her in this state.
As if Zachary could read her thoughts, he answered. “They are not yet at home.”
Sasha gave a curt nod and climbed out of the carriage. She hurried in and didn’t look back. The carriage retreated with the duke. Her words, still trapped in his head. My life will not get any better.
You’re impossibly hopeless, My Lady. He thought.
