For those of you reading this story, and thinking she just wants an excuse to see him ...you're wrong. Trust me, he was the last person I wanted to see. But I didn't know who else to go to. Ultimately, I was going to have to bring him a killer. I had promised to spend a night with him. I was not getting rid of Sorin any time soon so I might as well use him for what I can.
On the drive over I thought of how I was going to tell him everything, while also leaving out the parts Will had told me. The whole time, in the back of my brain, I thought about how much Sorin already knew. He had admitted that he was good at keeping secrets and said that he knew everything happening in his city. He had told Rhys to "stop or he would be stopped". If Rhys was involved, would Sorin already know?
But, why would he send us out to look for what was killing the girls? He said that these murders put all vampires at risk. If he knew something, why wouldn't he stop it?
My thoughts were cut short when I pulled the van up to the house. Like the first night, people were everywhere. A good number filled the solarium, some walked around the yard, and two sat on the front steps. This time, a large bonfire sat in the center of the yard. The two on the steps looked up at me curiously. I regretted my choice of black leggings, an ivory sweater and boots. All I needed was the Starbuck latte to complete the basic, autumn Mom look. The minivan really sold it.
Now, walk through the crowd of sexy, beautiful vampires and go see the hottest one of all so your humiliation can be complete.
"Priorities, Kate." I said out loud. Before I stepped out, I made a vow to myself. If I survive all of this, I am getting a new car and all new clothes.
Both vampires gave me a head nod as I walked between them and into the house. I could feel their stares on my back but didn't turn around. I was getting better at not caring. Thank God!
The entry way was, mercifully, empty. A silver tray, on the small table to the right, offered several glasses of blood. I picked one up and tossed it back like a shot. I was going to need energy for what was to come. I will not give into him.
Before I could leave the room, a voice called out my name. I followed the sound, with my eyes, and saw Will at the top of the staircase. He was smiling and walking down, towards me. "What are you doing here?"
He reached the bottom and gave me a hug. "I need to see Sorin."
"Oh, really?" He winked and bobbed his eyebrows up and down.
"Not like that," I said. "I just want to tell him some things and ask some questions."
He grabbed my right bicep and led me back into the kitchen. "You can't tell him what I told you." He looked, genuinely, scared.
I patted the hand on my arm. "I won't. I promise."
"He knew I came to see you," he said, taking his hand off my arm. "Thank you for telling him what you did. He actually praised me for taking you blood. I thought my heart was going to jump out of my throat. I thought, for sure, he would sense how scared I was."
"Don't worry," I smiled. "I won't tell. You put yourself a risk to share that with me." Time to change the subject. "Where is he?"
"In the solarium, last time I saw him. I gotta work but, maybe I can see you before you go?"
"Maybe," I answered. "Depends on how quickly I want to get out of here after talking to him. You can always text me."
"Ha," he shook his head. "I forgot. Sometimes, I forget what year it is and think I have to write a letter!"
