Chapter One Life and Death Layla's POV

Cross and I were just casually swimming in our shared tank when the lab door slammed open then shut quickly and when we looked towards it to find a crying Mia but the thing was I couldn't tell if she was happy or upset. She slid down the door and pulled her knees to her chest and started crying harder. So we patiently waited until she was ready to tell us what happened. She finally slows her crying to small hiccups then she slowly gets on her hands and knees and crawls towards the tank and sits in front of it. "I have something to tell you two. '' Mia starts then takes a deep breath and says "Xgaster got me pregnant" she started with tears coming down her face. It takes us a moment to process what she just said but when it does I start to feel the same as Mia but more devastated as I know for a fact she will keep this pup even if it costs her life and it just might. Selkies can't give birth safely without our pelts and I doubt Xgaster will give it back even though it would save her life because he has another female he can experiment on. But maybe hopefully he will as he can't mate with me without causing an attack from Cross as I'm Crosses female I just gotta have hope. Over the next few months, Mia's stomach became bigger and bigger and the more excited the three of us got. Eventually, the time came and Mia gave birth to a beautiful young seal pup. However, just as I had predicted months ago Xgaster didn't give her back her pelt for the birth as he fell in love with Mia and didn't want to risk her leaving. And so she died using the last bit of her strength she broke the membrane that covers her pup and as she does I'm frantically swimming about in the tank and after I built up enough Momentum I shot out of the tank and onto the floor in my seal form right beside my sisters dying body and cuddle up against her and her pup completely ignoring the blood along with the membrane and feed her pup as she wanted me to.  Xgaster eventually returns to clear out Mia's body and he was surprised to see me out of the tank with Mia and her pup as Cross looks at us from his spot pressed up against the tank crying but with a soft smile knowing that even though we lost our mother figure her legacy will live on in the form of her pup. Xgaster tried to take the pup but only received a nasty bite from me. My maternal instincts are still raging even though this pup isn't mine so he settles with just taking Mia's body away and letting my tongue clean the pup. After I slide out of my skin I climb the stairs up to the top of the tank and settle the pup who I decided to name Blank onto their inflatable kiddie pool full of snow and ice reminiscent of the north that has been prepared after we found out that selkies come into the world as seals. I sink towards the bottom and slide back in my pelt but only up onto my shoulder where my human head is out to talk to Cross. " I decided to name them Blank," I said, causing Cross to look at me funny at first then in understanding. Then we float in a mourning silence. It's peaceful the way Mia always liked. It stayed that way for about six months. Xgaster came to do experiments on me or Cross but he never came closer to Blank as he knew I would attack him. He knew better than to test me and is very hesitant to use the shock collar on me as the last female he has to experiment on. It was supposed to be a day like any other wake-up feed Blank breakfast, wake Cross play with Blank, give Blank lunch, keep Blank out of Xgasters sight, feed Blank dinner and put Blank to sleep after a cuddle and talk and cuddle with Cross then go to sleep myself then repeat the next day. Now the problem at hand. WHERE IN THE SEAS IS BLANK!? Okay, don't panic Layla, maybe Xgaster has them OH SEAS WHAT IF XGASTER HAS THEM!? HE'LL KILL THEM! IT WON'T MATTER THAT THEY ARE HIS FLESH AND BLOOD! As I'm rightly panicking and swimming frantically around the tank Cross comes and kisses me hard to calm me down. "Calm down Layla panicking isn't gonna solve anything so just breath and please don't cry you know you're too beautiful to cry". I then felt a shooting pain all over my body starting from my neck. I looked towards Cross and see he is in the same state then I start to feel numb all over my body as I slowly sink to the bottom of the tank along with Cross. But unlike Cross, I have to hold my breath or else I'll drown, and slowly I start to lose conciseness.
