When I go to sleep I see James. It's like a whole new world opens up. I also see James during school but no one else can see him. People think I'm I make him up. But I can feel him, I can see him, and I can hear him.
"Hey Dakota." James's voice says sweetly. He slides his hand around to my left shoulder and whispers it into my ear.
"Hey James. You probably shouldn't be here right now, I'm in school. And they can't see you remember? Only I can. They think I'm crazy."
"Sorry. I can't control when I come here. I automatically come here when I sleep."
"I know, I know James. But people don't understand-" I turned to face him and got caught.
"Dakota, would you like to come up here and teach? Because you're talking an awful lot." Mrs. Audrey said. "Otherwise if you're having an episode, leave the classroom."
The whole class turned toward me, in the back of the class room and it made my hair stand on end. Goose bumps ran up my arms. God damn it James. I stood up with a glare to the teacher and walked out. James followed.
"I'm sorry Dakota. I didn't mean to." He looked worried and sad.
"It's okay I've already been taking medicine for my schizophrenia. I know you didn't mean it." I went to him and hugged him. "How could you not exist? One of us has to be real." I said pacing and shaking my head.
"I know. And I don't know what to say."
"Don't say anything. Because you're still here right now wit-" the teacher appeared out of the classroom next to me.
"Dakota, I thought it would be in best interest to call your mother about this incident and she's on her way to pick you up. Get your stuff and go to the office. Now." She pointed down the hall way and then stood at the doorway.
"What?! No! This is not right." James argued.
I stomped into the class room and grabbed my stuff. Then I walked out.
"Dakotaaaaa." James came running after me.
"Yeah James?" I answered.
"Can we have an actual conversation right now?" He asked.
I sat down in the lunch room by a window to wait for my moms car to pull up.
"Yeah sure haha." I laughed and sat across from him.
"So... you like seeing me don't you?" He chucked and showed himself off.
"Completely love it." I winked and laughed. "An actual conversation?"
"Yeah," he winked back. "This is one."He was so tall. He had to be at least 6'4". His hair was not too long but not super short either. It sways to the side. Brown hair as can be. It's soft but yet thick. He was skinny too very skinny but it made his features pop out. His muscles are bulged and he has a 6 pack. His eyes changed are a chocolate brown and his teeth were perfect. His lips were like a girls; soft and thick. Perfect kissing lips. His sense of humor got me. Dry at some points, stupid at others and silly puns. He was addicted to some video games he had. He wore a mixture of clothes, between his high school graduation shirt and Chevy cut off sleeve shirts. Which made me so excited. His carhearts, bibs and jackets, and either boots or racing boots If I didn't know it any better I'd think that this boy is the other half of me in a different gender.
I quickly left those thoughts as I realized there was still a smirk on my lips.
"Whatcha thinkin bout?" He asked me.
"Haha nothing just realizing how similar we are." Just then I saw my moms car pull up. when she got out she wiped her mascara that was running and came up to the door.
"Hi baby." she said. "How are you?"
"Doing wonderful. Can you please stop pretending now?" I sighed to her and we walked out the door.
"You made me drop work for this! What is going on? Are you seeing your friend again?!" She yelled.
"Yeah. Have you been drinking again?" I said with distance.
"No. But we're going to the hospital. Right now." she said.
A tear slipped my eye but I pressed it away before she could see. My face was tight with anger. My parent picked up a water bottle that was in the cars cup holder.
I grabbed it out of her hands and took a whiff.
"Vodka! Mom!"
"Shut up and sit down. She threatened to smack me and I sat down.
James looked at me and put his hand on my cheek wiping the tears that feel from my wretched eyes.
She became addicted to alcohol after I was diagnosed for something I didn't truly have and now she drinks all the time.
We drove to a hospital while James and I stared at eachother. I cried in his shoulder and he stroked my hair.
___________________________________We walked in to the hospital and I was taken in almost immediately. I was sat down and the psych asked me some questions.
"What seems to be the issue?"
"The fact that people think I'm schizophrenic." I snarled.
"The first step to recovery, is accepting that you in fact are with your illness."
"You should tell that to my alcoholic abusive mother."
"Dakota!!" My mom screamed and she back hand slapped me.
James caught me and caressed my cheek.
"Dakota, you need to leave. You can't stay here. Your moms not safe."
"James I-"
"Okay this situation is out of control. Code blue." The psych yelled this down the hall and she explained the situation to a bunch of other mental nurses. They took my mom to another room and took me to a cell as well.
Once I was in a noise proof room, with James walking around the psych nurse, I was being questioned.
"Who were you talking to? Was it one of your special friends?"
"Yeah. My only friend." I said.
"Who are they?"
"James. His name is James." I was stern. "He is real. And yes he is special."
The nurse made some notes and left the room.
"What a bitch, huh?" James asked sitting down across from me. I know he was joking but he looked a little sad.
"Yeah. A bitch for sure." Then we both went silent.
