Chapter 17

“Rebecca!” Jennifer exclaimed as the redhead walked out from behind the drapes.

Behind her, followed the two siblings. Both had duffel bags slung over their shoulders.

“See what I’ve bought for us!” Jennifer jumped over to Rebecca in excitement.

Rebecca watched her lazily, as Jennifer brought up a bag and shoved it into Rebecca’s hands. Rebecca stared at Jennifer for a long time, before she slowly pulled the bag open, and tipped its contents out into her palm. She looked at the five-pointed star with a red gem in the middle with mild interest.

“I don’t use jewelry,” she finally said as she put the necklace back into the bag and shoved it at Jennifer.

With no other words, Rebecca stalked out of the shop and towards the car. She unlocked it as she waited for the other five people to get after her. In the back of her mind, she knew who would be the first one out. And she was right.

Seconds after Rebecca had pulled they key from the lock, Jennifer’s blonde head popped out of shop.

“Rebecca! This is not just jewelry. It’s meant to protect us from evil and stuff. Each of the five  points stands for each of the elements. I’m wearing one,” Jennifer said and pulled the necklace she had placed around her neck minutes ago out.

“And it’s nice,” Rebecca commented, taking in the pale gem in Jennifer’s necklace. “But I do not wear jewelry. What kind of evil do you think we’ll encounter, anyway?”

“I don’t know. But it’s nice to have, you know, to be sure,” Jennifer said. “It’s also meant to be a sign that the elements are united.”

Rebecca sighed loudly.  She didn’t want to wear it. Therefore, she would not wear it.

“I don’t care, okay? I won’t wear it,” Rebecca snapped.

The four people left in the shop came out, one after one, after Rebecca’s last sentence.

“Alex and Drew are wearing theirs,” Jennifer said as they neared the car.

Rebecca rolled her eyes and walked past her to reach the trunk of the car. She didn’t even bother replying. Jewelry had never been her thing, and it never would be.

“You can put your bags in here,” she said, looking at the two siblings.

Aaron and Ava walked over to her and slung their bags into the trunk. Ava walked away immediately, while Aaron remained at the back  of the car. He opened his bag and picked up the big book he had stuffed into it.

“I need to study this for a while, I hope you don’t mind,” Aaron told her as he straightened up.

“Not at all,” Rebecca answered with a tight-lipped smile. She closed the trunk and walked around. “You’re driving,” she said and threw the keys to Drew.

Drew simply nodded and walked around the car to the driver’s door. Ava had seated herself in the backseat behind the driver’s seat, pressing herself as far as she could get into the door. Aaron got in after his sister, and opened the book. Rebecca was quick to claim the seat next to him, interested in what he was going to read.

Rebecca had to admit, it was a tight fit for the three of them back there. She kind of felt sorry for Alex and Jennifer who needed to press together in the front seat.

“Everyone’s strapped in?” Drew asked, turning his head to look at the three in the backseat. He was grateful, that he had been given the keys, when he saw how close they were sitting. Even with Ava pressed into the door on one side, she had her brother’s elbows pressed into her side. Rebecca was crushed in on the other side of him. A small grin spread over his face as he looked at them. He was not a big fan of either of the three, so it gave him some kind of pleasure to see their uncomfortable positions.
