Chapter 4

Andrew Harris

The dinner table was quiet. Drew was looking down at his platter with food. Mr. Harris was staring at his son with a hard look. Mrs. Harris was looking at Drew, worried. Amy was looking anywhere but at her brother and parents.

This was like their family dinners had been ever since he returned. Drew had refused to tell his family what had happened. Really, how do you tell your family that you were kidnapped because of your extraordinary ability to control the earth and plants?

While Mrs. Harris was worried sick about her son, Mr. Harris was getting irritated that he wouldn’t tell them where he had been. Drew being kidnapped was the last thing on either of their minds. Still, they hadn’t made a theory. Most of the time they were just glad that he came back without a scratch.

It had been a silent month in the house. Amy had been locked in her room most of the time. She hadn’t invited any of her friends over ever since Drew disappeared. Drew had also been most up in his room, but Kimmy and Will had been over often.

Mr. and Mrs. Harris had been sitting in the living room, barely ever turning on the TV. They would rather whisper in quiet voices about what they would do with him. They needed him to spill.

“So, Drew… Did you have a nice day at school?” Mrs. Harris asked in a soft voice.

“Fine,” Drew answered vaguely.

“Did you talk to Dinah today?” his mother asked.

“No,” Drew answered.

Drew hated how careful everyone was around him ever since he got home. He knew they wanted to know where he went, and why he left, but no one dared to ask. He knew they tried to treat him like they had done before he disappeared, but it was hard.

Drew didn’t think he had changed at all. But his family acted all weird around him, like they didn’t know what to talk to him about. Whenever he pictured going home to his family, it would always be a happy reunion. They would embrace him, they would talk it all out, and everything would return to normal.

The first part was true. Mrs. Harris barely let go of him the first hour he was home. But when it came to Drew explaining where he had been, he got all chocked up. He couldn’t tell them. He didn’t know what to say. Because of this, nothing returned to normal.

“Why not? She’s such a sweet girl,” Mrs. Harris sighed. “And she was so broken when she learned that you disappeared.”

“I don’t want to talk to her,” Drew explained quietly.

Truth to be told, he had talked to her. He tried to apologize for never showing up and for not contacting him. But she didn’t care that he didn’t want to talk about everything. Drew had told her countless times that he didn’t want to talk about what happened with him, and that they couldn’t take a raincheck on the date. But Dinah refused to listen. She wouldn’t leave him alone. She followed him around like a lost puppy. Drew was starting to get very annoyed with her.

And to top it off, his mother adored her. She barely ever stopped talking about Dinah. She didn’t get the hint that Drew wanted her to stop either.

“Don’t bother the boy,” Mr. Harris said gruffly to his wife.

Mrs. Harris frowned at her husband, but didn’t say anything more about Dinah.

The rest of the dinner was spent in silence.

“So, are you guys coming over this afternoon?” Kimmy asked Will and Drew the next day at school.
