Pepa's Eyes
A morning dawned for us, but not a good one. Everyone was still in edge and we couldn't eat outside in the fresh sunlight. It made sense. We were still on lockdown.
It was a good thing Julieta taught her two daughters to cook while Mirabel was still young. It's been years now and they made a great breakfast at a time when their mother can't cook. But even though the food was good, it could not ease our stress.
Bruno: Mama, I looked into the future last night.
Alma: You did?
Bruno: *Nods head* Yep.
Luisa: Great! Maybe it can tell us when Mamá will be able to cook again.
Bruno took out his tablet and passed it around so that everyone could get a look at it. They each took turns moving the tablet left and right.
Bruno: As you can see, the three people in the vision are Pepa, Julieta and I. According to what I saw, Pepa and I may have a part to play in fixing Julieta's gift.
Dolores: This is great! Tía Julieta will soon be cooking again.
Camilo: That's a relief. I was starting to miss her cooking.
Isabela: *Sus of Camilo* What's wrong with our cooking, Camilo?
Camilo: Nothing. It's just that your mom's food is better.
Mirabel: Of course it's better. Her food heals things.
Camilo: Yeah. That's why I miss her cooking.
I looked at my sister as the children were chatting among each other. A bright and happy expression had found its place on her face. Seeing that put a bright and happy expression on my face as well.
Alma: Did anything else happen in the vision, Bruno?
Bruno: *Sighs* Yes. Carmelita's mob broke into the casita no matter how hard it tried to keep them out. We tried our best to defend ourselves and each other against the mob. What's worse, someone was kidnapped during the raiding.
Antonio: Kidnapped? Oh no!
Luisa: Tío Bruno! Who was kidnapped?
Me: We don't know, Luisa. We could only see a few parts of the kidnapped person's body. We don't know if its a boy or a girl, a child or an adult.
Bruno: They will come, Luisa, so its up to us to be prepared to fight when they do come.
Me: *Looks at Julieta* And Julieta must be ready to confront Carmelita.
I could tell Julieta was nervous about that part. When it was for Mirabel, she felt as if she could do it. But for herself, that would be hard for her. Especially since Carmelita would have practically an army behind her.
Alma: I see. Casita! A mob will be coming here. When they come, be prepared to defend and attack.
The casita used one of its windows to answer "yes".
Alma: The same goes for all of you. Use your gifts to defend yourselves.
Isabela: But, Abuela. Some of us don't have gifts in defending or attacking. Some of us don't have gifts at all. What about them?
Alma: Defend them too, Isabela. Your plants are strong. Surely they can create some sort of protection against the mob. Luisa, your strength and easily match that of a few townsfolk. There is a way for you all to protect each other. We must find that way. We cannot afford one of us getting kidnapped. Does everyone understand?
Everyone else: Yes, ma'am.
Dolores: I will keep listening out for the village.
Camilo: I'll use my shapeshifting to blend in with the mob when they do come.
