Julieta's Eyes

What crazy idea did Bruno have? What would it do to help the village see that I wasn't the witch that Carmelita was making me out to be?

We followed Bruno out of the jailhouse. We had to be very sneaky and stealthy so that no one in town would be able to see or hear us. We finally found ourselves behind the house that just happened to have a place in the middle of town. There, Carmelita was about to make an announcement.

Pepa: What are you doing, Bruno?

Bruno: Just wait and see.

Carmelita: My friends. Today is a good day. We are all here today because today is the day we watch as we burn the witch who has been among us for far too long. Once we rid this town of Julieta Madrigal, neither she nor her troublesome family will ever threaten our peaceful existence again. After today, we will be cleansed of the cruel and despiteful witch who once put fear in our hearts.

Bruno: *Steps out in front* You're wrong!

When Bruno stepped out into the front, we followed behind him. The town gasped at our appearance.

Bruno: *Eyeing Carmelita* You're wrong about Julieta and you're wrong about our family. *Faces the audience* And you were all wrong to believe her. Our late father made a sacrifice to save us all from the war. That was over 50 years ago, *eyes Carmelita* while you were just a baby. To protect us, our family was given a miracle. Ever since then, we've been using our gifts to help this community. Of course, we have forgotten that, as we clearly agreed to break into the Madrigal Casita and kidnap one of them. Don't you see? Julieta helped this community far more than Carmelita ever did.

Pepa: My brother is right. I see people who were once in pain, even people close to death who are now as strong as ever in this very crowd. *Points at a man* Alberto, didn't you have a sore throat just about a month ago.

Alberto: Why, yes. Yes I did.

Pepa: And wasn't it my sister who made you the arepa that healed it.

Alberto: Yeah, you're right. If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be able to sing as well I can now.

Pepa: *Points at a woman* Frida. Wasn't your youngest son very sick?

Frida: He was. In fact, he was on the verge of death.

Pepa: Help me job my memory. Why is it that your youngest son is with you right this moment and not one with our ancestors.

Frida: It's because of Julieta. She made him a churro and it was life his sickness was never there.

Pepa: I see. Alberto, Frida. Julieta has helped you both, yet did that ever occur to you when you agreed to *targeting Carmelita* this sick woman's sicko idea to raid us?

Alberto: *Ashamed* No. No it didn't.

Frida: *Ashamed* We were prepared to watch as the sweetest person in all of the village burn before our eyes. Almost as if she never did us any favor.

Bruno: You see, you'll never find anyone with half the heart Julieta has. She cares about this community as if it were her own children. But someone lead you to forget that. Someone used an accident to turn you away from the kind woman to who you owe your life. *Faces Carmelita once more* Carmelita Díaz, you've humiliated our sister all those years, and the worse humiliation she faced that day her gift went wrong was of your doing and your doing alone. But the worse thing you could've done was try to tear apart our family, by attempting to set Julieta ablaze.

The crowd muttered among each other. They were in serious thought.

Carmelita: (Very confused) Li-

Mirabel: Save it, Carmelita! Not another word.
