Chapter 5- Unknown
I stood outside the great hall, waiting in anticipation. I glance over at the other smaller kids, who seemed almost as excited and nervous as I did. The only difference was that they were starting there first year, oblivious of the possible future ahead or what happens after they go through these doors. I on the other hand had some knowledge, without being too cocky, however I still felt the Challenging unknown they did. I had already experienced magic, and yet I still felt like there was so much more to learn and understand.
It has been a few days since the dog incident, and I can't seem to shake the thought that he looks familiar and almost hums like. I try to ignore it and sustain some of my sanity, however I'm still lost and confused with these loose ends. First I swear the dog was the one that scared harry when he was about to catch the night bus, but it seemed impossible to be the same dog.
I glanced at the younger students. They were all grinning ear to ear, and we nervously chatting to one another.
"I heard they make you stand in front of the whole year and answer impossible questions about magic", a small girl with short brunette hair piped up to her friend, who were both looking intensely nervous.
"No that's not right", the friend with black hair replied, " they send spells at you that you have to dodge, otherwise you die! Then there's a battle to the death for the last remaining students!!".
I laughed silently at their ideas, as more and more of them started coming up with ridiculous ways of how they sort out the juniors. Some even involved the headmaster punching them in the face to see whose blood was magical.
After they continued with their ridiculous ideas the large great hall doors opened and revealed a stern Professor McGonagall.
"All of you will now follow me", she stated before turning around.
In two lines the youngsters and myself followed McGonagall down the great hall. It was like when I first arrived, however the great hall seemed more magnificent. The lights were glowing above, and instead of a roof we were greater with cloudy skies. Older students sat patiently down in four different houses, however whispered to each other excitedly as the first graders and I walked by. A few judgmental looks were shot at me, however I continued to walk, blocking out their negativity. Others however gave me small smiles, in particular a group of gingers.
"Welcome first graders and our new student Cosette". Professor McGonagall greeted loudly, "Once you name is read you will make your way to the front were a sorting hat will decide your houses. Firstly we have Alden, Peter".
A rather tall kid with a smug look walked up towards the hat. Everything was silent for a minute until a large voice bellowed out "Slytherin". This continued, with students being sent to various houses, until my name was called out.
"Cosette".
I took a brave step forward and made my way to the hat. I sat down on a stool and waited until professor McGonagall placed the hat on my head. I felt like something trying was trying to enter my mind. Like the hat was alive and was trying to get into my inner and deepest thoughts. I panicked and imagined I could place a barrier up, and stop what ever it is. I thought of a wall blocking what ever it was, and after a while I was just greeted with the silence of my own thoughts. I felt relief, however after a long moment of silence I was greeted with a large bellow.
"UNKNOWN", it stated loudly, giving myself a startle.
I glance around and saw shocked faces on everyone, expect the first graders as they stood curiously in front of me. Everyone stared at me with open eyes, as Professor McGonagall took the hat off my head, and I was lead to a room towards the back of the hall. I was followed with the curious glances of hundreds of students.
I was hushed down a few steps, until I saw thousands of golden trophies that were placed on numerous polished bookcases. They sparkled in the light of the room, and had weird names written on the like "Quidditch". I felt like I had stood in the room for an eternity, as time started to tick by. It wasn't until a tall figure entered the room, with a sense of superiority flowing around him.
He had greasy hair, and a rather long nose. He seemed mysterious and was wrapped in a long black cloak. He gave me a dirty glance, and waited silently as more teachers entered the room, including Professor McGonagall and Albus Dumbledore.
"What happened", Professor McGonagall questioned, "the sorting hat has never had that result".
"Cosette", Dumbledore said, "What happened when the hat was put on your head".
I glanced at the confused and curious teachers.
"I don't know.. I felt something try and enter my mind", I retold, "I don't know how to explain it but I felt it and I somehow blocked it".
They gave me a shocked expression and remained silent for a while. The Big nose teacher was wide-eyed and glanced at me like he was trying to look into my soul. Professor Dumbledore however held a marvelous grin, and the sparkle in his eye began to twinkle.
"Incredible", Dumbledore stated, "Truly remarkable".
"Well... what should we do now", Professor McGonagall asked, "She has no house".
"Well I suppose we shall wait and see what happens", Dumbledore states before walking towards the exit, "We shall let you decide once you get settled in".
He exited leaving the rest of the teachers extremely confused.
"He can't possible just be leaving this", a plumpy teacher asked Professor McGonagall.
"Well I think he might be", She said before turning to me, "For now I suppose we will have to find some sleeping arrangements".
"I guess", was all I managed to say as we slowly made our way out of the trophy room.
The great hall was empty, with the table completely bare. I let out a sigh as I followed Professor McGonagall. This was not how I wanted to be welcomed into Hogwarts. The Unknown Girl named Cosette.
