VIII. THE FEAR OF ABANDONMENT
The Sangonomiya Shrine was more grand than you expected it to be, and Watatsumi Island itself was gorgeous. The ground was different from anywhere else you'd been before, with different shades of pink and purple covering the grass. It filled you with a calming sensation that felt like your body was being rocked to sleep. Though you didn't have much time to admire your surroundings, unfortunately, since Aether had to meet up with Kokomi. However, you were still happy to tag along, since Aether had confirmed that you were his friend.
"Are you okay?" He asked as you finally arrived at the shrine. "You don't have to stay if you don't want to."
"I'll stay," you said. "Friends stick together, right?"
"Right."

You harshly whipped your head to the side before taking a deep breath and following Aether as he approached Kokomi, who was talking with one of her soldiers. You glanced around the shrine to see that the building itself was larger than your own home, and behind it was a giant half of a pink shell; there were plenty of those everywhere, though the ones in all the other parts of the island were ten times smaller. There were also fountains on each side of the bridge you needed to cross in order to reach the high priestess of Watatsumi Island.
Aether and Teppei went ahead to Kokomi while you crouched down beside the water and dipped your hand in, scooping out a small handful of liquid. It was so clear that it seemed to shine; you'd never seen anything like it. You continued staring into your own reflection from the water, closely analyzing your own features. It had been a while since you took a look at yourself, actually. You reached up and stretched out the skin on your cheek, acting as though it was the first time seeing yourself. There were a few blood stains on your clothes, which you sighed at before returning your attention to your face. You gazed into your eyes and saw a stranger looking back at you.
"ʏ/ɳ, աɦօ ɨʂ ʂɦɛ!?"
Your head snapped to look behind you, but there was nothing that hadn't been there before. Turning back around, you sighed. You furrowed your eyebrows and grazed your bottom lip with your index finger. Looking at what you could see of your torso, you bit the inside of your lip.
"'I don't know'..." You whispered.
"And... Who's that over there?" The unnamed soldier asked, pointing behind Aether and over to you. Your head perked up slightly since you could tell he was asking about you.
"Oh, that's F/n," Aether answered. "She's our friend."
"And traveling companion!" Paimon added.
You subconsciously smiled until you saw what you were doing in the reflection and forced a frown.
