I woke to the sound of a monitor beeping and bright fluorescent lights shining in my eyes. I winced slightly from the brightness of the light, it was causing my head to pound. I heard slight shuffling next to me but didn't look to see what it was. What happened? What was going on? Why was I in a hospital? I worked in these places all day long, I knew I was in a hospital the second I woke up. The smell, the lights and the beeping was all to familiar.

"Easy. Drink this." A deep slightly familiar voice commanded from next to me. I did as I was told when a straw was placed on my lips and drank the cold water. It was soothing as it ran down my dry sandpaper throat. I opened my eyes a little bit more and looked over to the man who had given me water. The second my eyes landed on him though the memories of the club came flooding back. My whole body began to shake and I shook my head at him.

"No. No. Get away from me. I don't know you. Leave me alone. Where's Kara and Liv? Are they okay? What the hell is going on?" It was like word vomit coming out my mouth. The man just looked at me, I thought I saw a flash of worry across his face but it was replaced by an emotionless gaze. He was dressed in a suit that was slightly wrinkled from being sat down too long, and his top couple of buttons were undone with the tie slightly loosened exposing the hint of tattoos on his chest.

"I'm sorry, you will have answers soon but you need a doctor to check you over and make sure you're okay." He spoke in a low voice, his mouth opened as if there was more he wanted to say but he stopped himself before turning and walking to the door of the room. He stopped for a moment before he walked out to get a doctor. I knew who he was, I remembered him, but where were the girls? After the shots began everything was a blur, I remembered the face of the man holding the trigger and blood. So much blood. But... I can't remember much else. A few minutes later a tall man in a white coat walked in with a small smile on his face.

"Hi Eliza, I just need to check you over and make sure everything is okay. You've only been out for a few hours." He walked towards me flicking through papers on a clipboard before he began to do his assessment. Checking the dilation of my pupils, my heart rate, blood pressure. All very basic stuff. Although we were in a hospital, it's not the one I worked out. I didn't recognize it. Where was I? The closest hospital to the club was the one I worked at...
"Everything looks okay, we're going to keep you here until the morning for observation but if everything is still okay in the morning we will discharge you. Do you have any questions ma'am?" The gentleman asked me, I was about to shake my head when I changed my mind.

"The two girls I was at the club with, Olivia and Kara... Are they here too? Are they okay?" I asked, trying to make sure my voice didn't falter me and I began to feel panic setting in my stomach.

"I'm sorry Eliza. There was a shooting. Kara is in a coma and Olivia... she... she didn't make it. I'm so sorry." He spoke, causing my whole body to shut down. Liv.... She was gone? No, he's lying. I was just with her. Kara, she's alive but, in a coma? No he's wrong. He's got it wrong. They're not. They're fine. This is just a nightmare. I began to pinch my arm wanting to make myself wake up but it wasn't working. When he realized what I was doing to grabbed my hand to stop me from hurting myself.
"I'm so sorry for your loss ma'am. Mr De Marco is in the waiting room. Would you like me to get him?" I frowned at the doctor, trying to process everything he had said. I was fighting the tears that were threatening to fall from my eyes.

"Mr De Marco?" The doctor nodded and gave me a small smile.

"Yes, the man who brought you in here." I shook my head, not wanting to be around anyone. I was thankful that he brought me here but I didn't really know him. His name was Mason and I met him at the club last night, that's all I knew.
"Do you have any other questions ma'am?" He asked me if a soft and caring tone. His sympathy for me was reeking worse that a moldy bowl of fruit. I hated that.

"Erm... yes, where am I?"

"You're at Harlem Hospital ma'am." I nodded my head. I was still in New York. I worked at Lenox Hill. So I wasn't far, but why did I get brought here? Why not Lenox Hill?
"Before I go, can I give you a word of advice?" I frowned at him but nodded my head for him to continue.
"Be careful who you associate with at the moment." My confusion only grew from there. What did he mean? Was someone dangerous? Who? I nodded my head and he took that as a sign to leave.

Sat alone in the room, I allowed myself to feel everything. Sobs racked my body and pain filled my chest. Liv was gone. She was really gone. Who knows if Kara will be okay. And I got out of there with hardly even a scratch. Why did I get so lucky? Why couldn't it have been Liv that lived instead of me? She had so much more to live for than I did, she had a family who loved her, she was top of the class at med school, she was going to be an amazing surgeon. Whilst I'm... I'm nothing compared to her.

A light knock on the door made me jump a little, I wiped my eyes and took a deep breath before letting them know they could come in. Mason poked his head through the door, before walking in fully and closing the door behind him. He had a sandwich in his hand, that he brought over to me and placed it on the table next to the bed.

"You need to eat something Eliza, I brought you this. Please eat." He said in more of a demanding tone than an asking one. I bit my lip and turned my head to look out the window. I wasn't hungry. How could I eat right now?
"Eliza. Eat." He said in a stern tone causing me to look over at him with a frown.

"Who are you to tell me what to do? I'm not hungry. I want to go home." I spoke back in just as stern a tone as he had. He let out a deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose.

"I didn't save your life at the club just for you to starve yourself to death in hospital. If you eat I will speak to the doctor about discharging you." The stubborn part of me didn't want to give into his orders but I did really want to go home.

"Fine. Go and speak to the doctor." I said in a stubborn tone. But instead of leaving the room he sat down in the chair next to the bed and pulled out his phone.

"Once you've eaten I will." I let out a huff and reached over grabbing the sandwich. He didn't look up from his phone whilst he spoke, instead he sat with a blank face typing into his phone. I nibbled on the sandwich hating every bite of it that I took. But once I started my stomach began to thank me, it growled a little from the hunger, I hated my body for betraying me like that. I looked out the window as I ate, it was dark out and the city lights were lighting up the night sky. It was actually a very beautiful view of the city. I could tell I was high up in the building, with a full view, you could see for miles out there. I wonder how much a private room with a view is going to cost me!

Mason stuck to his word and once I'd finished eating he went to speak to the doctor to get me discharged. It was obvious he didn't want to discharge me just yet, but when he was speaking to Mason he seemed to be... scared of him. His hands were shaking slightly as his side, and he hardly even looked Mason in the face. Is he who I should be careful of?
