Tanjiro does have more experience than Jonathan and his Water Breathing See Through World might give him information about how Hamon works, but JoJo's faster and his Hamon provides extra abilities like self healing. Plus he could directly affect Tanjiro's organs, which is something for Water Breathing to work and thus cripple many of Tanjiro's abilities.
