Tale of the Wounded

A vast sea,

Covered in pitch black clouds.

It fills a void,

Of shattered hearts

And restless minds.

The sea is filled with crimson

An unidentified man lays on shore.

It's hard to tell,

Just how long he's been there.

Hours?

Days?

Months?

His breathing is shallow,

A bloodied wound dug deep across his chest.

He's covered in a dark sludge,

Trapped in the shallows.

Waves tug at his shoeless feet.

Someone approaches,

His pitiful soul doesn't react.

Even if he were to fight-

He wouldn't live through it again.

His chocolate eyes close,

Lacking any ounce of life.

The battles he'd fought were too much to handle.

A gentle hand caresses his face.

He leans into the feeling of warmth,

The eerie quiet of the sea echoing in his ears.

If this is how my life ends, maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

He thought, letting out a shaky breath.

He felt his mind slipping,

It'd been so long,

Since he felt the caring warmth of someone else.

The hand moved to his damp forehead,

Washing away the biting cold.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Coffee eyes slip open,

Just enough to identify the figure at his side.

A girl,

Of an age similar to his own.

Full of regret, for not seeking his cries sooner.

"I'm sorry."

She says.

His shaky breath wanes,

He forced a smile.

"It'll be okay,"

She said.

He chuckled softly,

As the sea began to rise.

"Not even you can save me,"

He choked,

The warmth fading.

She backed away, standing upright.

His heart,

Or what was left of it,

Ached for that warmth.

He turned his head, as she backed away.

He felt dizzy-

Sick.

He never noticed,

How bright she shone.

Crash.

The sea lapped at his legs,

Trying to drag him in,

Trying to drown him.

He wanted to stand,

He wanted to chase after the warmth.

She turned to him,

A white dress, fluttered in the breeze.

"All you need to do is get up,"

He wanted to,

He needed to,

Yet he knew he could not.

His body was as heavy as lead.

His eyes pleaded with her not to go,

Yet she left.

As everyone else he knows had done.

A storm in the sea had begun-

A storm of the heart,

Of the mind.

Both at odds with one another.

He couldn't get up.

At least, not this time.

He turned his head back to the sky,

Hearing the waves become more distant,

Before his mind went dark, and he fell limp.

The storm continued,

As the man on the shore lay.

This life,

Had been too much

For him to handle.
