Chapter 2. The Gift

Flashback

"You knew who killed my brother? My parents?" I demanded when he entered the penthouse he housed me in.

"I didn't exactly say that Leanne," said Mr. Nixon Black, the one who found me in the place where parentless children are first taken to. He was my father's emergency contact hence he arrived a day later. He immediately took me with him. I was too shaken to even protest. Besides, he was okay, didn't look creepy. "All I'm saying is I'm looking at it right now. There was no evidence found in the area."

I paced back and forth. This can't be good. How am I supposed to avenge my family's death if I don't know who the culprit is?! Yes, you heard it right...avenge. He too was the one who nurtured my thirst for revenge in just a short span of time.

"Patience, Leanne, patience... come here," he said, motioning for me to sit with him on the couch. I reluctantly went to him and sat beside him. "We will find him, I promise you that." Then he started stroking my hair. "How many birthdays have I missed, dear?" he asked.

"T-thirteen. My birthday's coming next month," I said, flinching a bit at his touch.

"I will make it up to those thirteen birthdays, fourteen even. Your family's murderer will be my gift to you, dear. Just be patient. In time, I will have you let your own revenge," he said, plastering a smile on his face. It made me shudder but I had to trust him. He's the only help I could have. He's the only family I have left.

End of Flashback

The memories of that night come visiting me on my way to our meeting place. Maybe because I'll finally get to have that gift. Soon, my family will have their justice. And soon, I will have my peace. I can also rest.

I'm actually tired. I'm already tired of being Nixon Black's daughter. When will I get to live as normal person?

I spot him on the farthest table of the diner - our "meeting place". I quickly make my way to him and sit in front of him. "Why the cheap diner, Mr. Nixon Black?" I ask, wondering where he's put all his wealth.

"Well, I figure we should have a change in environment once in a while. I realized I've been isolating you in that penthouse too much," he says. So, the old man finally notices.

I only get out of that place when he takes me to trainings or when I have to do my job. Technically, my life is house-school-workplace. God, I have a lonely life up in the penthouse. I don't have any friends or contacts with the outside world. No one. The only people I am allowed to talk to is Nixon Black, my private teachers and instructors and the cook. No one else.

He feared for my safety. He told me that my family's murderers might be waiting for me outside. He would feel better if I'm in plain sight aka my room. He even installed cameras on each corner of the place to observe and watch over me. Sweet.

We got interrupted by the waitress bringing our greasy foods. It's been a while since I've had these kinds of food. I'm mostly fed with foods that make my muscle and bones stronger. It's essential for the kind of job I have.

I see him flirt with the waitress and I send them daggers. They even have the time to flirt in front of me? I am actually waiting for my gift.

When the waitress left, Nixon Black shakes up with laughter. "Relax, dear. I'm just trying to blend in. I've never been to this kind of place in my life," he says when he caught me staring at him. "Besides, someone told me this place is full of wonders. And I must say, she's right."
