A few years ago, new species came to the area who had been here with us so far. They secretly believing that The Empire was planning something. Because of my mom's injury, we became more open, but we also became more cautious. We couldn't really trust others. I had new friends who helped with the farm, we were able to produce more than The Empire required and with the permission of The Empire we could sell the golden wheat, its quality was very good, so we got more coins compared to others, and there was more interest because of the imperial license.
My mom was always home and some of my friends and I went to the markets with the crop.
This morning I'm going with Frig, who isn't soaring like me. He is an igmur with completely black skin, a long pointed, almost lanceolate tail, a mane on his head and two pointed horns and brilliant golden eyes. He can tell a creature at a glance whether he is trustworthy or not. He trusts me and it reassures me. We are at the same age, so my mom says that's why we understand each other. He is always there if I need help since my father was taken away he was the first to helped me. Kind, caring, protective.
When I got out of my bed I immediately thought of Frig: Has he got up yet? Or is he still sleeping? Or maybe he's already here? While I was getting dressed, I was thinking on which market to go to. Now is the time to harvest most crops so there will be plenty. I thought across the river, it always used to sell well. Here, instead of the doors of the rooms, there are hangers, I made it for myself, I made it from my dead feathers, they are getting smaller from top to bottom. I stepped out my door and saw my mom drinking something.
- How delicious is it my dear mother? - I asked
- Good morning sleepyhead. Germ flower tea, darling. - She knows that's my favorite, and I even saw a slight smile on her face. She had already made one for me too, I was just turning to sit in front of the house when Frig entered, holding a bouquet of flowers and a wide smile. I looked at him in surprise, then put down my tea and hugged him.
- Good morning Frig! I felt his surprise, then he hugged me back too and whispered in my ear:
- I brought your favorite ones.
With a grin, I let him go and saw a bouquet of firefly flowers. I looked back at my mom and she quickly turned her head on this so we wouldn't be embarrassed. I took over the plants and gave it to my mom to take care of while we are away. Both of us went out in front of the house.
- Well, where do you want to go? Which market is your decision? Beyond the river or across the plain? - he asked as we set off halfway through the barn.
- Well, I haven't decided yet... - I said as I looked in front of me. - but I think it would be best to go beyond the river now.
He grinned, I saw it out of the corner of my eye. He knew I loved going there. Everything is calm there and the magical species are accepted there. The plain is more difficult, the humans doesn't trust us there, it is closer to the capital city of The Empire. We reached the barn door when Frig grabbed my right arm and pulled me into the building. He pressed against me the wall and looked deep into my eyes. Her green eyes just glowed. I'm lost in those eyes. He stroked my face with his right hand while holding my waist with my left. I made a circle around us with my wings, not as if someone saw me, but that way I felt much closer to him. We looked at each other for a few seconds then I closed my eyes and he pressed a kiss to my forehead. I shuddered, shaking even my wings. He noticed this too and I heard a slight giggle from him and then I started too.
- What is it now? You know what I like. I'm rarely loved. - I said.
- Then I'll change that! - he said in a slightly more serious voice.
In the meantime, it occurred to me that we would have business too, the crop would not sell itself!
- We should go, my mom will be angry, you know.
We silently loaded the wagon and then set off as we walked in front of the house, I saw my mom waving at us. I threw her a kiss and waved at her while Frig drove Suron and Hugg.
We crossed the river and the small town was already there. Its noise could be heard from afar. Leaving the quiet harbor, we arrived at the market. Frig stopped the krells, Suron and Hugg. We unloaded a portion of the crop and applied to the The Empire's inspector to sell the excess crop. As soon as we got back, they were already interested in the wheat. We sold a lot, it was almost sold out by the afternoon. I started to get hungry, I asked Frigg if he wasn't asking for something but he said no. I told him I would find a place where I could eat and then I would come back. I knew the place well, we had an acquaintance who ran an inn, he often gave us food for non-human species like us. When I got there he was standing in the doorway.
- I'm sorry I can't serve you now. There are human soldiers inside the inn, if they see me here they will take me. - he said with complete frustration on his face
- Oh ... well, I'm looking for another place, you are already risking a lot by giving us food. I don't want to put you in greater danger. - I said with full understanding, then turned and walked to see if I could find someone to buy food. I turned into a small street, at the end I saw a board of an inn hanging, I aimed and then set off. I stopped abruptly because four soldiers stepped out the door of the inn and they were all looking at me. I pursed my wings so that my otherness would not appear to them, disguising it as a dress, since it was already dark. I turned around and left. I heard people talk about me. I walked faster and faster, but I didn't turn quickly enough into that one street but it was a dead end. I turned back but it was too late. The soldiers were there.
- Oh, what a cute girl. Everyone loves fresh meat. - one of them said.
- But you have to get rid of that pretty dress, unfortunately. - the other added. That's when I realized that they believed in my plan, on my wing I really think it's a dress.
- Come here, my beauty, no one will hurt you.
Then I suddenly spreaded my wings and all four soldiers stepped back a couple in fright. Two drew their swords. I didn't know what to do, maybe it was a bad idea. They walked towards me, getting closer and closer. I didn't want to fly away because I didn't want to end up like my mom then. I retreated, I began to accept that it was over. All of a sudden, a giant black wolf appeared across the street, snarling and growling at the soldiers, or maybe at me. One half started, jumped on him. He bit his back of his neck. The man screamed and collapsed, the others turned away from me and shouted at the wolf to make him disappear. It just kept snarling. It started running out of nowhere, it was so fast. He caught one solider's leg which had no sword. He hit the creature's back with his bare hands. The other human set off for the wolf. The light of the moon flashed on his sharp blade. I wanted to intervene. I remembered what Frig had taught you if somebody would hurt me. I shot myself with the help of my wings, placing my right hand and wing in front of my face so I could push The Empire's solider away. I slammed him into his side, collapsed, shouted, dropped his sword as he fell, stood up and ran away. Celebrating my victory with a grin. Then I remembered the wolf. I glanced over he was just done with the last one. Then he let go of its neck and looked at me. His snarl and anger disappeared. He calmed down and then I felt dizzy as I felt my body collapsing. I looked at my body and saw an arrow drilled into my side. I felt my body burn, but I got more and more cold because of the blood loss and then everything went dark. I felt the cold ground as I fell. Then it also disappeared.
