I cringed at the squeaky hinge of the metal front door of my new school. My 3rd new school of the year not to mention. I was so tired of moving from place to place but my father, being in the military, had an obligation to fulfill.
I watched silently as hoards of students made there ways through the hall. There chattering and footsteps echoed off the cement walls around them as they went about there day. I clutched tightly onto the paper which my schedule had been printed onto. My dad made sure to get it ahead of time for me, his way of trying to make amends for having me pack my shit and move across the country, again. It didn't work.
I guess I hadn't realized how long I was standing there before I caught the attention of a fellow student. A redheaded girl walked up to me, waved her hand in front of my face, and giggled. "Hello! Anybody home?" She laughed, her smile wide and straight. I shook my head to bring myself back to reality. "Ya, sorry. I was just thinking." I replied, my eyes now meeting the ground out of embarrassment. She let out another laugh. "Do you need me to show you where something is? My next period is a blow off. I have time." She said, hooking her arm with mine as she quickly pulled my paper from my hands.
I didn't get the chance to protest, just smiled and nodded and walked along with her. "Oh you have Mrs.Grundy for English. Just make sure to get a seat in the back. She tends to pick on the front row." She explained as she pulled me along down the linoleum lines hallway. I nodded in understanding. "I'm Beverly by the way." She said suddenly as if she was appalled that she had forgotten to introduce herself. "Nice to meet you. I'm Stella." I smiled.
"Well here we are. Good old English class. I gotta get going. If I'm late to calculus again I'll get detention." She giggled, rolling her eyes. I have her a nod of understanding and a thumbs up. "Thank you for the help." I replied shyly. "No problem! I'll find you after class new girl." She tossed over her should are she was already making her way off down the hall.
I made my way into the classroom cautiously, hoping to god no one would stare at me, but of course I wasn't that lucky. Everyone's heads turned quickly in my direction, some strident whispering to each other as they looked at me. I hated this more then anything. What I would give to never be the new girl again. "Alright class, settle down. Settle down." The hefty women with dark brown curly hair remarked from behind her wooden desk.
Her eyes suddenly made there way around the room before landing on me. I quickly averted my gaze, praying to god she wouldn't acknowledge me in anyway. My prayers where unanswered. "Ahh, I see we have a new student joining us today! Why don't you come up and introduce yourself young lady." She said, gesturing to the space next to her, beckoning for me. I let out a heavy sigh- (Insert tik tok audio "can I just be shot?" 😂) before I pushed myself up from my desk and headed for the front of the classroom.
"And what might your name be young lady?" She questioned, a tight smile plastered across her wrinkled face as she waited for my answer. "I'm Stella" I replied shortly, already incredibly embarrassed as every kid in class stared right into my soul. The sound of the classroom door swinging open caught my attention along with the teachers and everyone else. A blonde boy with his hair cut into a mullet strode his way inside, his cowboy boots thudding loudly against the floor. A sigh of annoyance escaped Mrs. Grundy, the look on her face making it clear that this wasn't one of her star students. "Ahh, Henry. How nice of you to join us. Late again I see" she said, her tone laced with irritation. The boy smirked as he sat heavily down onto one of the classroom desks blue plastic chairs. "At least I showed up" he retorted, leaning his elbows lazily on the wood of his desk. Mrs. Grundy grumbled, clearly not in the mood or a back and forth with the boy. She rolled here eyes once more before turning her attention back to me. "You may have a seat, Ms. Stella." She smiled gesturing for me to head back to me seat. I nodded, giving her a tight lipped grin as I hurried my way down the isle.
At that moment I realized the desk I had set my things at just happened to be next to Henry. Oh joy, could my say get any worse? Doubtably. He smirked once again as he watched me sit. His eyes making there way over me as he leaned in my direction. "Don't think I've seen you around here before" he said licking his lip. I scoffed in disgust, he was the last person I wanted to talk to.
The smirk that had once graced his face had now morphed into a frown. "What? I can't talk to you?" He grumbled in annoyance, clearly not amused by my lack of enthusiasm. "I'd prefer if you didn't" I replied, not looking back up from my notebook as I began to write. Suddenly my pencil was snatched from my hand in an aggressive manner. He was now leaning in my direction, a grimace on his face. "I'd watch my attitude if I were you." He said through gritted teeth. I didn't reply to this only stared back at him with squinted eyes before grabbing my pencil out of his hand and once again averting my gaze to my notebook.
For the rest of the class period I refused to look back at him again, doing everything in my power to ignore him. I wasn't looking for a fight and I sure as hell wasn't about to get in trouble over some random boy. My eyes flickered up to the clock face that sat above the white board every few minutes, waiting anxiously for the bell to ring. It felt like an eternity before the sound finally rang out through the classroom.
Slamming my notebook shut and shoving it into my bag as quickly as I possibly could I almost tripped myself rushing to the wooden door before taking off down the hallway. I prayed that the boy would just leave me alone, that maybe the annoyance from my rejection had worn off and he would just simply forget, but once again, my prayers remained unanswered.
I felt a hand come down on my shoulder before I was harshly slammed against the lockers to my left. I gasped, the sudden movement startling me. "You should really learn to be a bit nicer when someone's trying to talk to you" Henry's voice growled, his face only inches from mine. God why couldn't he just leave me the hell alone. "And you should really learn to fuck off" I replied, rolling my eyes, no way he would hit me, not in a crowded hallway. His grip on my forearms tightened and he shoved me harder against the metal compartments. Ok, now I was a little scared.
I noticed a couple of other boys approaching. A tall dark haired boy who hunched a bit as he walked, a smirk across his lips as he stared at the unfolding scene, a larger boy wearing a baseball hat, and a smaller blonde boy.
"What's the hold up?" The smaller blond boy asked, his hands shoved down in his pockets. "Just a broad who doesn't know how to keep her mouth shut." Henry answered. The smaller boy rolled his eyes as if Henry's violence was a normal daily occurrence. The taller dark haired one got closer, licking his lips creepily as she approached. "Maybe you should put her in her place don't you think?" He chuckled, the sound making goosebumps run up and down my spin. Henry didn't reply, just smiled before shoving my backpack off my shoulder causing it to tumble to the ground, scattering my belonging across the hallway.
I just stood there for a moment, dumbfounded by the actions of the boy. "Well-" he said, gesturing towards the mess he had just mad. "Pick it up." At first I wanted to ignore him, to shove him away from me, maybe even hit him, but judging my how hostile he was already being I assumed he had no problem assaulting me further whether there were witnesses or not.
I slowly crouched down, starting to grab my things from the linoleum and place them back inside my bag. My hand reached out to grab the notebook I had been writing in during class but before I got the chance to grab it a boot came down right next to my fingers. I guessed terrified that he might stomp on them, pulling my hand back out of fear. Looking up at him, he smirked maliciously before kicking the notebook further down the hallway. "Slut" he barked one last remark before he began to walk away.
I took that opportunity to grab all my things shoving them quickly into my bag before I got up and sprinted towards the office. Hurrying to open the brown door before I had to meet anyone else in the hallway. I made my way quickly up to the desk of the secretary my chest rising and falling quickly. "I would like to call my dad. I'm not feeling well."
