"Where are we going, Hawk?" Natasha asked with a frown. It was about midnight and after the nightclub he had dragged her to, she just wanted to go back to the helicarrier and sleep. She wasn't drunk but the vodka and coke she had downed had made her mind a bit foggy. "I don't-oh, you absolute bastard." Stark Tower was at the end of the street, the A glowing like a beacon. "Why are we here?"
Clint giggled. He was more than a little drunk. "Told you I could get people to listen to me."
"You convinced Tony to what?- see me? Reject me? So you can have an excuse to be able to ask me out and-"
"Woah, Nattie," Clint slurred and he grabbed her hand. "C'mon, let's run to the tower."
"You're drunk. I'm not going anywhere with you. This is most likely a set up or you've made your convincing Tony up in your drunken mind," she replied. She tried to pull away but his grip was tight. "Clint..."
"Take a risk, Natalia," Clint said. He didn't seem as drunk then as his sharp eyes swept the street. "We can run without being interrupted. Don't you want to run?"
"Not if it just leads to Tony telling me that he's in love with Pepper."
"It won't."
"How can you be sure?"
"I have faith."
"In Tony?"
"In you." Clint smiled. "No-one ever forgets their love for you, Natasha. So Tony won't choose Pepper. He will choose you. He's lucky enough for his love for you to equal your love for him. Now, go up there and let Stark give you a huge romantic speech."
----
Tony waited nervously. His every muscle was tense and he kept twitching whenever he thought he heard the elevator. Barton had text him half an hour ago saying that they were on their way. He didn't think that the other Avengers would be up for this plan but they were surprisingly helpful. Rogers had cooked the meal- steak and chips with apple pie dessert. Bruce had brought over lots of candles that he said he used when he was meditating. Thor, of course, couldn't do anything since he didn't even know of this plan; Tony wasn't even sure how to contact him. Barton had promised that he would bring Natasha then he had issued a number of death threats if Natasha got her heart broken.
Pepper had understood. She wished him luck, hugged him and left yesterday. It was kind of a relief that it wasn't such a big drama. Any other woman would have told a newspaper or two and got a big story out of this but Pepper understood the necessity to protect Natasha's identity and Tony's privacy.
She would be telling people she had broken up with him because he was annoying her. That came with much less publicity. Nothing they couldn't handle.
Eventually, his phone buzzed with an incoming message from Barton. He answered. "Is she here?"
"Should be on your floor in about two seconds. I'm just warning you again, Stark, if you hurt her-"
"I won't," he replied and hung up before Barton could carry on.
----
Natasha was incredibly nervous as the elevator juddered to a halt on the 70th floor of the building. The top floor, she noted, miserably. When she was reading up on Tony on her original assignment, it had said that he always reserved the top floor for helicopters because he could then create an opening ceiling to fly straight out of.
A helicopter floor didn't seem romantic. Maybe Barton had got it all wrong and this was actually just a mission to report back to Fury. Probably a status update about a new type of weaponry. She looked in the mirrors that covered the interior of the elevator and made herself look business-like. Her hair was loose so she tried to flatten it down; her little black dress wasn't exactly agent uniform but it would have to do; as always her purse carried a gun and a small knife so she got out the gun and slotted into the top of her thigh-high stockings.
"Gorgeous," she heard someone say and jumped, dropping the dress down to cover the gun again. The doors had opened whilst she was preparing herself and she stepped out before they could close. "Don't act so coy," the genius said, smirking. "Remember I've seen you naked."
"That was two years ago, Tony," she snapped but then smiled at him, unable to help herself. "What can I do for you?"
"Didn't Barton explain?"
"I didn't believe him," she faltered as she looked around. Candles were hanging everywhere and a delicious smell was emitting from the table. "Is this-"
"For you? Yes." Tony smiled and she could hear the worry in his voice. "Don't you like it?"
"It's wonderful. I just...I didn't realise that...that you were telling the truth. When you said you loved me. I-"
"You thought I'd choose Pepper?" Tony laughed. "Not over you. Never over you."
"You did before," she frowned, slightly irritated by the look on his face. "After our time together. My assignment."
"If I remember correctly, you chose Barton over me."
"You know that wasn't-"
"Ever going to be real? Yes, I do know that. But then I was hurt and mad."
"So I guess-"
"I-"
"Stop interrupting me!" Natasha sighed in exasperation. He stopped, looking sheepish. "I guess you've made your decision."
"Yeah."
"And?"
"Do you even have to ask?" He grinned and pulled her towards him. Their lips crashed together and she smiled into the kiss. It felt right, finally. Their relationship couldn't hurt anyone anymore. It wasn't cheating. It wasn't secret. It wasn't dangerous. "Now, I made us some steak."
"You can't cook," she replied. "If I remember correctly, you failed Home Ec."
"I forgot you've read my file. Damn. Well, Steve has made us some delicious steak," he grinned and led her to the table. "I love you, Natalia."
"It's Natasha," she poked his arm. "And I love you too."
