We sat on the curve stomp eating and laughing at nothing, he told me that he didn't expect me to even come out and I told him that I didn't either. I shivered when the breeze would hit but I never noticed him showing any sign of being cold at all.
"I could hear you playing outside all day," I said as he handed me a miniature Slim Jim. I took it politely and gave my thanks. I haven't eaten like this in a while, not since I was younger. "It's the better way of practicing for me." His nose was turning pink and he hid his fingers inside of his sleeves.
"For a second I thought I was delusional, you showed no sign of being cold at all." He laughed and sipped his half-drunken juice pouch. "When you ice skate or snowboard you kinda become immune to it." I don't even know this guy, and for some reason his presence makes me feel like I'm soothing my inner child.
"So you're multitalented, noted." He scoffed before grabbing a gummy worm and planting it inside of his mouth. "Only in the cold." I couldn't help but search him for a second, admiring his character to take further notice of who he was.
His body looks slim and built. Like he works out a lot during his free time. "You do something too." It caught me by surprise that his statement wasn't indeed a question. Like he was so sure I was in a particular sport. "Track." He nodded with a reassuring smile to himself.
"I could tell by the way you ran when we met. You're really damn fast." I thank him before taking one of the snacks. My eyes couldn't help but shift towards his hockey stick, I searched it too in curiosity. "You wanna try?" He smiles getting up from the curve with a groan. I quickly shook my head while remaining at rest in my normal position.
"Common, you won't get hurt. I'll make sure of it." I let out a deep nervous sigh, "I don't know how to skate." He grabbed my hands to pull me up on my feet. "Everyone starts somewhere." He helped me put the skates on. I could feel my heart drop the moment my feet moved apart and my legs shook in order to compose my balance.
He grabbed me immediately like he promised he would. Making sure to only push my feet forwards when he had a good hold around my waist. "This okay?" He asked looking at me for a second before receiving a nod. "Yeah."
"Okay now push one leg forwards and then the other. Look down at your feet to make sure they don't get caught up in each other." I do what he says slowly and precisely. We accidentally make eye contact for a second. "Good. You're doing good." I hold onto his shoulder as I stride closer.
"You're gonna get used to the feeling and eventually I'll let you take the hockey stick too." I cock my eyebrows at his words. "This isn't a one-time thing?" I question and he chuckles. "Not anymore."
"Hey, I never got your name," I say lifting my head from my feet to look at him. "Liam." "Nova."
"Alright Nova, make sure your skates don't get caught up in that rock." I nod dodging the rock.
"You're not bad at all, just a little insecure." I hum in response. "Is that so?"
"Yeah, it is."
