when the city sleeps

Mom came home today, I didn't say anything when she arrived. I only watch her greet my little brother with a tight hug. I listened to her talk a little bit about work too. She let her hair flow in its natural wavelength. Letting herself go from the tiredness built in her body.

She poured wine, she smiled too. I watched mom and my little brother dance in the dim lights of our kitchen. I watched her body sway with the music she turned on, her favorite song. I watched as her happiness re-evolved.

I went to my room expecting her to follow after me, as expected she did. She came, sat on my bed, she looked around at everything in my room that I found interesting, everything she didn't know about me. She gave a light smile, a soft and gentle feeling to my space. She was calm and collected. I stared out of my window, sitting on my windowsill.

"How've you been, Nova?" I turned away from my boy that had not been standing outside anymore. "Fine." My voice was straining and cracking too, it was tired and needed to rest. So did I. "Are you looking for that boy?" She questioned and I turned towards her, looking in her eyes for something more, something that I knew I wouldn't receive.

"Boy?" She nods in solidarity, "The one that you meet every night in the yard when everyone's asleep. When the city sleeps but you're awake."

I looked down again, hoping and praying that I could find him to settle my heart at this moment. "He looks like a sweet boy, I can tell he treats you well because he always brings you snacks that you give to your brother." We both let out small chuckles before she gets up to cuff my face.

"Baby, why didn't you tell me?" She whispers as I lean into her touch, the feeling of actual motherly love sprouting through my lungs. "Mom..." I stopped talking, my voice was cracking, my face was heating, and my eyes were watering. "You know I love you so much my love, you're my entire lifeline. I would never ever give you up because of your sexuality."

"I love you because you're a human being just like me. And when you bleed the way you do, I do too." She says showing me her blood vessels as she gently wipes my tears. "I haven't seen you be so vulnerable since you were younger. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry for leaving you to tend to my adultery. It was selfish."

"I love you, and I'll quit that stupid job to maintain time with you guys from now on." I quickly shake my head at her crazy talk. "No mom, it's okay." She smiles, "I have money in the bank. Enough to withstand a normal life for you guys. I don't want you to worry about that anymore."

I hug her tightly, so tight that I feel like my younger self again.

"Bring him by, I wanna meet him."
