L'histoire commence le 24 mai 1863 à Hambourg lorsque le professeur Lidenbrock et son neveu Axel découvrent un vieux parchemin dans un livre du 12e siècle appelé "Heims Kringla".
Une chronique des princes norvégiens qui régnaient sur l'Islande.
Ce parchemin, une fois décodé en latin et traduit par Axel s'est avéré être écrit par un alchimiste du 16ème siècle et se lit comme suit :
"Descendez dans le cratère de Sneffels Yokul, sur lequel l'ombre de Scataris tombe devant les mollets du voyageur téméraire de juillet, et vous atteindrez le centre de la terre. Je l'ai fait."

Sneffels est une montagne de cinq mille pieds de haut en Islande. Un volcan éteint, dont la dernière éruption remonte à 1229.
Et ainsi commence le voyage de Hambourg à l'Islande commence...

This parchment, when decoded into Latin and translated by Axel
Proved to be written by an alchemist of the 16th century and read as follows:
"Descend into the crater of Sneffels Yokul, over which the shadow of Scataris falls before the calends of July bold traveller, and you will reach the centre of the Earth
I have done this. - Árni Signússon"
Sneffels is a five-thousand foot-high mountain in Iceland
An extinct volcano, its last eruption having been in 1229.
