Chapter 22

Haley did everything she could to hide what she was feeling when the kids came home with Kian. She pulled him into their room after dinner, when all the kids went to bed.
"Please explain this..." she said tensely, shoving the picture in Kian's face. Kian had completely forgotten about them; he assumed that Jac had deleted them.

"Haley...it's not what you think...."
"You and Jac were together? I know it was before we met...but you never told me? Why?"
"Haley....Jac and I were together....just after my accident in Wales. I was afraid of getting hooked on painkillers again, so I left.....that was when I met you. I swear, after Jac and I started working together again I never went behind your back. Please, believe me!"  Kian begged.
Haley paused, thinking.
"I don't understand. How come you didn't tell me?"
"Well .....it was difficult and I didn't wanna risk losing you. You mean the world to me, Haley. Jac was your friend, too. I had screwed up with Jac; you were my new start."
"I'm sorry.... I never meant to accuse you....I know you would never cheat on me." Haley sighed. "I guess you must miss her then."
"Every day. I hope you forgive me."
"Of course I do." Haley replied, hugging her husband tightly. "And I promise you, I will never leave you. I want to be your wife forever."
"And I love you for that."  Kian whispered, kissing her passionately.

Farrah's birthday came up fast. The presents were bought, the decorations set. Haley and Emma worked together to make the cake; chocolate chip. The party was a small affair, with a few friends and family. The birthday girl passed out asleep that night. Haley and Kian tucked their little princess in bed, ruffling her wavy dark hair.
"Remember when she was born? I had her on the floor of your office.  Sacha helped deliver her."
"I was so scared when you started bleeding. I screamed for you when they took you to the operating room." Kian added, hugging his wife close.
"I was pretty much out of it because of the pain....but my biggest fear was that I'd never hold my baby. Then I woke up the next morning and saw you holding her, and that all disappeared." Haley responded.
"I never stopped being terrified. But I knew that the two of us were strong enough to handle anything that life threw at us together. And I'll never forget how proud you looked. You're  such a great mom, and I can never thank you enough. You've changed our lives forever. We couldn't have done it without you."
"I love you."
"I love you more."
Haley kissed him.
A few days later, they decided to try and get the kids to bed early so they could have some alone time. The paperwork to be Emma's guardians was almost complete. There would be a social worker coming to visit in a few days, so the house had to be perfect. Haley was wearing her favorite nightgown. Kian had made sure their bedroom was perfect; scented candles everywhere. After making love, they lay in bed with their arms around each other, just enjoying each others company. After awhile they were lulled into a comfortable silence, and eventually drifted off to sleep. They were on cloud nine for the next few days.

They whole family was ready when the social worker came to visit. Kian greeted her in the doorway. She glanced in Emma's room.

"I see she gets everything out of boxes." The social worker observed.
"Yes....we didn't know whether her dad would come back, so we kept everything packed. We're planning on dividing the playroom downstairs to give Emma her own room." Kian explained.
"I noticed the house is baby-proofed."
"Ah, yes. Jacob is still getting into things, like most toddlers. We did everything to make sure he was safe." Haley answered.
"Alright, safety-wise it appears you can care for Emma. I would suggest continued counseling, and scheduled visitation with her father. Looks like you're cleared to be Emma's guardians."

The best part was sitting the kids down and tell them the good news.
"Farrah, Jacob! Guess what? Emma will be living with us!"
"Really?!" both girls exclaimed.
"Yeah! We are taking care of her!"
"She'll be like my big sister!" Farrah said, hugging Emma.
"Yes. She'll be a part of our family."  Kian said to his kids.
