Kian came home as soon as his shift was over. Haley had dinner cooking and he immediately felt the tension leave his shoulders. He loved being home with Haley, and he loved their two kids. But sometimes he missed the quiet, where he could relax and forget his problems.
He pulled Haley aside as she got the table set.
"Babe, I have some news about Jac, but don't tell anyone yet....it's rough."
"Let's wait until the kids get to bed, so they don't catch wind of it. Okay?"
"Yeah, I think that's a good idea. Let's just enjoy our evening. We can talk about it once they are asleep."In her bedroom, Haley sat on the bed as Kian told her that awful news: Jac had a brain tumor, and it was inoperable.
"No...it can't be true." Tears filled her eyes, but she managed to keep her composure, knowing she couldn't break down if Kian saw.
"I never thought this would happen to her; she's such a strong woman. I mean, anyone can have mental health issues, but you never think about cancer."
"I know, babe," he sighed, sitting next to her on the bed and holding her. "But she'll pull through, right?"
"Of course she will, we'll just have to be there for her through it all."A few days later, Haley saw Jac in the Cafe at the hospital. She walked over to her, and sat down. She and Jac weren't best friends, but Farrah and Emma were close and Jac had been there for everything.
"Hey, what brings you here? It's not everyday the two of us bump into each other," Jac said, raising an eyebrow when she noticed the pregnancy book in Haley's hands.
"Kian told me...about the cancer. I knew you would need support. What do you plan to do?"
"It hasn't gotten very far, but I'm trying to keep my options open. The doctors have already spoken to me about surgery...I want to fight this...I have to for Emma."
Haley took Jac's hand, smiling warmly. If Jac was the Ice Queen, Haley was a sunny day in July.
"Jac, if was in your place, I'd do everything I could to stay alive for my kids. We all love you so much. I know this is scary, but if there's one thing you can count on, it's that you're stronger than this."
"Thanks." Jac smiled back. "How's Jacob?"
"He's fine, he plays with Farrah all the time. Speaking of which, do you want to do a play date with the girls?"Jac sighed.
"I don't know, I've arranged for Emma to live with her dad.""Well, let me know." Haley said, trying to keep the situation normal; like she wasn't talking to a dying woman.
No one knew Jac only had a few months left.
