Her entire life had been a sad ride. All her childhood memories, at least those she
remembers involve her going to hospitals, either for her treatment, or her parents. Her mother died of the same disease she has, and her father was killed during an intense bar fight. She then moved in with her brother, John, who does anything and everything possible to care for his little sister, pay their fees, hospital bills, and for their personal needs.
Melody Darling Gabriella Krislo, an eighteen year old student with exceptional talents, a grade A student, but unfortunately ill and unpopular.
John Martin Krislo, a twenty one year old student, who was supposed to graduate a year ago.
“Melody has a severe case of multiple sclerosis. Her double vision, weakness, fatigue among others shows it.” The doctor looked into John's eyes with a look of pity."What is this multiple sclerosis? What does it mean?" John asked.
"Well Mr. Krislo, it is a disease that can be treated, but can't be cured. It occurs when the body's immune system attacks its tissues resulting in nerve damage, thus disrupting the communication between the brain and the body. A person with MS may experience vision loss, fatigue, pain in the eyes or body, muscle paralysis, difficulty in walking, persistent urge to use the toilet, among others"
"Well doc, Melody has been going through some of these, she at times becomes sensitive to my touch, she sometimes can't eat well, and most of what you said". But can she, you know?"
"Yes Mr. Krislo, if you're trying to know if your sister can die, there is a very rare chance that she can. Now it is not very likely, but in its advanced stages, it is possible to die if there are any complications. But on the bright side your sister can live a relatively normal life. "
"But?""Why must there be a 'but' Mr. Krislo?"
"There's always a but Doc."
"It's very unlikely, but most people with MS live for about seven years or less. The disease is not generally the cause of death, but as it progresses her vision, memory, writing, speech, all could be affected"
"Okay, so *clears throat* how can this be umm, treated? Does she gotta do chemo or anything?""Mr. Krislo , multiple sclerosis isn't cancer. she can continue her physical therapy sessions, we can give her medications for the pain, we can give her some oral drugs but there'll be side effects. At home, she needs plenty of rest, easy exercise, just to ensure she does not experience numbness in any part of her muscles, eat a balanced diet, and do non stressful things. For now Mr. Krislo, take good care of your sister and make her feel loved."
"That's what I do everyday Doc. But thank you very much."
