6) Part One
Unknown POV
~Almost Two Decades Ago~
They were walking through the gardens of heaven when he came running down the path, covering his face as he sobbed.
The souls of small children scattered as he blindly ran through a flower bed, not stopping to apologise for his disturbance like he always did. Feeling a tug of immense sadness, they followed. "Brother, please wait!"
He didn't slow. "Aden!" They yelled.
They watched as he kept on running until he'd reached the abandoned Temple of Spirit. The beautiful weather was a sharp contrast to the dark cloud they knew would be hanging over him. This one would be harder for them to fix.
As soon as he'd pushed open the double doors they followed after him, making sure that no one was watching. Their stomach lurched as they too hurried up the delicate steps in the morning sun, fearful of what they'd find.
Once inside, they saw Aden sat on the front row, hidden by the overhanging shadows. His shoulders were heaving even as he tried to contain his sobs. This was the worst they'd ever seen him and it scared them. Cautiously, they shut the doors - eliminating the sunlight - as they took a step forward, followed by another.
"Brother?" Tears stung at their eyes as they swallowed. He looked to be in such a sorry state. How were they going to get through to him this time?
He didn't respond.
"Brother?" Deciding to face it head on, they kept on walking until they were sat right beside him. Placing a reassuring hand on his arm, they leaned in close until their heads were almost touching. "I'm sorry," they whispered.
Silence.
There they sat.
Nothing else needed to be said.

~Present~
It's dawn.
The first rays of sun ignite the grassy field they sit in; the wind blows softly, whistling past their ears. Nothing surrounds them but endless grass and the pink sky above. The scene should be peaceful, except it isn't. It's the opposite.
Dawn. That's what their name translates to.
When they were young they used to think it was a blessing - their name stood for new beginnings; a new day. They could create their own destiny.
It had been empowering.
But, as always, the delusion soon ended and they couldn't stay naïve for long. When the dawn of the sun lit up the Garden of Souls all those years ago, only to reveal the corpse of their murdered brother, the tables had turned. Dawn had meant no such thing to them anymore.
Since then dawn symbolised death, the end. Total destruction.
Chaos.
However hard they tried, they couldn't associate it anything else. No one could blame them. It was those vile memories that prevented them from seeing it any other way.
Cautiously, as they sat down on the spiky grass, that thought only seemed to fuel their fire. Dawn meant death because their brother was dead. Gone. Taken from them forever. They could never get him back.
There was only one reason as to why their brother was dead, and that reason still lived. Still breathed. Their lip curled.
Neither of them should still have the privilege. Aden didn't.
In order to calm their fury, they stared intently ahead of them, thinking of how they could inflict a slow and painful death upon the two. If only for the sake of their brother and for themselves, they would extract their revenge.
Without warning they released a low, sorrow-filled moan. The mental image of the corpse of their brother refused to budge, teasing them. Taunting them.
It seemed like it would be forever engraved in their memory, left to torture and maim them.
He'd been so lifeless and his expression so sad. It killed them to know that they could never change how he'd felt. Now they would never be able to tell him how much they'd loved him - really loved him - and it was all their fault.
Gabe and April needed to die.
