Buzz, buzz. Tinkle, tinkle, tinkle. Buzz, buzz. Tinkle, tinkle, tinkle. Motherf-whoever was calling better have a damn good reason. Otherwise, I was going crazy bitch on their ass.
"Hello?" My voice crackled from sleep.
"We've got another body." Jesse's somber tone came through like a sledgehammer.
I sat up and flipped on the light, thanking god I'd broken the lamp by the couch and not the one next to the bed. The clock read 3:15 a.m. Not comforting at all.
"Details."
"Body was found about an hour ago. Report's going through to your office now."
"Can't I get one fucking night off?"
He laughed. "You're becoming the new boss so no."
"Body still out in the field?"
"Waiting on you and Cap."
"Page him. I'll be there in twenty." Plus or minus because of traffic.
I ended the call and glanced to my left. Gregori was still asleep, his arm now wrapped around nothing since I'd moved away. He looked peaceful, more than he had in a while. I reached out and touched a lock of dark brown hair resting against his forehead. He kept it short normally but with everything going on...there was never enough time to do anything.
It didn't take long for his pager to go off. I was buttoning my jeans in the bathroom when I heard the annoying beeping from the other room. He groaned, sounding irritated and tired, and I heard the bed springs creak right before...
Smack!
He slammed his hand down on his bedside table and I smile/grimaced. That poor table took more abuse from him than it should. I went out into the room, cursing the fact I only had enough time to wipe down the important bits. I wanted a shower, bad.
With eyes narrowed at the pager, he asked, "What is it?" sleep still tainting his voice.
"Another murder," I said, putting my socks on.
"Shit." He sat up, alert. "When did you get the call?"
"Five minutes ago."
"Why didn't you wake me?"
He got up and approached me while running a hand through his hair. I ignored his nakedness but it took more effort than normal.
"You looked content. Didn't want to wake you."
He smiled and surprised me by rubbing my arms. "Next time wake me up."
He kissed my forehead, his hands coming up to cup my face. So many rules being broken this morning.
"And miss the show?" I shook my head. "No thanks."
The tired smile bloomed into a grin as he rolled his eyes. "You're such a tease."
"You weren't saying that five hours ago."
He chuckled. "No. I think I was calling out for the Christian God."
"At least you found religion."
"Yeah, it's called Geo-ism."
My turn to break the rules and I did so by running my hands around his torso to hug him. "One of these days we need to find time for us."
"Oh?" He wrapped his arms around my shoulders in response. This wasn't normal. He had to know. "Why's that?"
"This would all be easier if we didn't have to race off to work or a new crisis every morning. We need a break."
