The opening band's music fills the stadium, a recently debuted Kpop girl group with promising music. How could I not help them?
I keep my eyes closed and listen to their music, certain parts feeling inspired by BDGH's music. My phone buzzes in my pocket but I refuse to look at it. I need to focus, I need to sing and smile and make everyone that showed up tonight happy that they came.
"Bada!" Deiji's familiar voice pierces through every other sound and my eyes snap open.
"Deiji?" I call out scanning the crowd for her blond hair. Moving away from the edge even though the band is wrapping up their final song I weave through workers trying to finish preparing for my set and greet the other girls off stage.
"Bada!" Deji calls again and I spot her head, illuminated by the black lights. I'm already running to her before I can think of anything else. A tall figure steps in front of Deiji coming between us like a wall, I can barely see her eyes over his shoulder. I recognize the slope of his shoulders and the line of his jaw immediately. How many hours did Deiji and watch his videos, his interviews, dance to his parts on youtube?
"It should have been you, you know?" Gun's voice is almost as distinct and clear as Deiji's. I stumble to a stop.
"Excuse me?" Deiji's eyes scan passed him probably trying to find me before I go on but I'm just standing there and they're already calling my name.
"Bada doesn't have what it takes to go solo. She was fine in a group where she had you to take care of any heat but now that you're gone, she's cracking."
His words suction the air from my body. My vision blurs as I fall back a few steps.
Gun never thought I had it in me to go solo.
"Bada is still young." She says but I can't focus on her words anymore.
BADA BADA BADA
The crowd keeps chanting and my lungs don't know how to work anymore but I turn away from Gun and Deiji and run out onto the stage.
"Bada Bada Bada!" I chant with them. "My heart beats for you!" I call to them tears pricking my eyes. The band goes right into it and I hit a high note straight off and the crowd screams.
I was not the most technically correct singer or the best belter or dancer and I was no leader but as the crowd sang along with me and my heartbeats chanted in time with mine, I felt whole. The kind of whole I only ever feel when I'm with my friends. I do my choreography perfectly and sing loudly, I sing my words with everything in my soul
"I keep hearing every single thing against
I keep on hearing all the things that they can't see
I'm just trying to get up and keep on going"
The words spill around me, every emotion that has been weighing me down since I decided to keep going on my own lifting off my shoulder for just a moment as my voice takes up the stadium and my heartbeats sing my words back to me.
