You sat there looking through one of the photo albums that contained pictures of your grandpa and it nearly brought you to tears, next Thursday would've been his 74th birthday. You had lost your grandpa in 2008 due to a heart failure and he would've still been here had they gotten the heart an hour earlier than they did.

"I can't believe it's been almost 15 years, it just seems like yesterday that we lost him." Your best friend said taking a seat to you.

"I know he would've been 74 this year. I still wonder what it would've been like if he would've made it." You said quietly sniffling.

"I do too. Your grandpa was the best and I feel so grateful to him for bringing you into my life." She said wrapping her arms around you.

"I am too. I'm just so grateful for you and your family." You said on the verge of tears.

See after your grandpa passed, your best friend's family took you in as one of their own since you were basically there while your mom worked and when your mom passed away when you were 22, they took you in officially as their own.

"I miss him...I miss them both." You said breaking down into tears.

She gently rocked in back and forth as you let out the river dam that you had been holding in the past few days. After a few minutes, you calmed down and pulled away, and dried your eyes.

"It's going to be okay, I'm here for you and I know Damian is here for you as well even if he isn't here in person." She said squeezing your hand.

"I know and I appreciate that. I'm gonna go lay down and see if I can get ahold of Damian." You said as she nodded her head.

You made your way upstairs to your room and climbed into your bed, and turned on some show that you usually slept to before unlocking your phone and calling Damian. After a few rings, it sent you to voicemail, so you just left him a voicemail before locking your phone and letting sleep overcome you.

Damian had just got back from finishing up his day of press when he saw you called him and left a voicemail.

"Hi bubs, I know you are probably at work right now but I was wondering if you could call me back *sniffles*, I'm.... um, I'm missing them today and need to really hear your voice or something. I love you."

Damian's heart broke hearing your voicemail, he knew you had been struggling the closer it got to your grandpa's birthday, he so desperately wanted to be there with you and hold you in his arms and let you know it was gonna be okay and that's when an idea struck him.

*NEXT WEDNESDAY*

You were doing somewhat better since last week, you still had your moments where the grief would overcome you and Damian let you know that you could call him or whatever and he would answer you back as soon as he could.

You were woken up by someone knocking on your door, making you groan and wonder who the hell was at your door at 7'oclock in the morning. You rolled over and pulled the blankets up higher over your face, hoping whoever it was would go away, but clearly, they weren't. You got up wrapped your blanket around you and made your way to the front door. You looked out your peephole and saw Damian standing out there.

"What is he doing here? He's supposed to be on the road for the next month." You thought as you opened the front door.

"Before you say anything, after our conversation last week I couldn't stand to hear you being so sad and not being able to be here for you so I talked to Paul and Stephanie and they granted me a couple of vacation days to come to spend with you." He said stepping inside the house nearly bringing you to tears as none of your previous relationships were ever this caring.

"What did I do to deserve you?" You asked wrapping your arms around him as he chuckled putting a kiss on your forehead.

"Everything." He said as he guided the two of you over to the couch.

*THURSDAY*

"What are you making my love?" You asked wrapping your arms around his waist as you pressed a kiss to his shoulder.

"Your grandpa's famous eggs and ham, I got the recipe from your aunt. I know it's probably not as good as his but I wanted to try to make it for you." He said turning and placing a kiss on your lips.

"I'm sure they're gonna be perfect. You taking the time to even attempt to make it is all that matters to me because none of my previous relationships did anything close to what you're doing." You said.

"Well, they are all idiots for not doing something because that would've been their family, dead or not." He said as you took a seat on the island.

A few minutes a plate is placed in front of you along with your cup of coffee that you have every morning and then Damian takes a seat next to you, pulling your chair closer to him.

"Babe this is delicious thank you." You said as you ate your food.

"Good I'm glad, now thank me by telling me a story about your grandfather." He said making your heart swell at how much he cared.

The whole time you told a story about your grandfather and his marines, Damian listened attentively to you and squeezed your hands when you struggled to talk about him. After breakfast, you both got dressed so you could head over to the cemetery.

"What are we doing here?" You asked as Damian pulled into the flower shop parking lot because you would assume you would swing by Walmart and pick out their nice arrangements to bring to him along with his other offerings.

"Be right back." That was all he said before disappearing into the shop leaving you confused until he walked carrying a gerbera daisy arrangement.

"I called and asked them if they could do an arrangement of gerbera daisies for him since they are his favorite flowers and knew are chances of finding gerbera daisies in the stores were pretty slim. Do you like it?" He asked climbing back into the front door.

"Are you kidding? I love it. Thank you." You said throwing your arms around him, fighting the tears that were threatening to spill because your grandpa would've loved him.

Once you arrived at the cemetery and at the area where your grandpa was buried, you and Damian made your way towards his grave which had a few flowers already set there from people who came to see him.

"I miss you, happy birthday." You thought as the tears slid down your face.

It felt like a presence was beside you squeezing your other hand causing you to look to the side where you saw a cardinal at your feet meaning your grandpa's spirit was here with you one way or another.

"You know he would've loved you." You said leaning your head on Damian's shoulder.

"You think so?" He asked.

"I really do." You said squeezing his hand as he placed a kiss on your forehead.

You guys spent a few more minutes at his grave before you were ready to head home, as you guys were walking back, Damian took a few minutes to say something to grandpa.

"Thank you for her, and I promise to love and take care of her." He said to the grave and then he felt a presence beside him almost like your grandpa was acknowledging what he said.
