FREYA, daughter of Mikael had grown used to being chained.
It hadn't always been that way. Once upon a time, she had been a happy young girl. A young girl who adored playing with her younger brother, mother, and father. But everything changed when she was five years old.
It had been a typical winter day for the family. Father was off fighting in some great battle with some of the men of the village fighting by his side. While Freya was playing in the snow with her younger brother, Finn and Mother were seated in a chair on the porch keeping an eye on them and simultaneously stitching up a tear in one of Father's old tunics. When Freya used her magic to throw snow at Finn, Mother disregarded her secondary task and she came over to scold Freya for using her magic against her brother. But they were interrupted by a dark-haired woman who claimed to be her mother's older sister, Dahlia.
Freya had had no idea that her mother had a sister. Not long after this discovery, Freya found herself being grabbed by Aunt Dahlia. Mother and Aunt Dahlia would trade harsh words. She'd become frightened by their exchange and her fear worsened when she was picked up by Aunt Dahlia who would carry her away from her mother. Freya would cry and cry for her mommy's help but Mother didn't come to her aid. So, Freya was taken away from the only family she'd ever known by an aunt that she had previously never known existed.
She would come to learn that Aunt Dahlia was not a kind woman. She'd cruelly tell her that her mother traded her away to have more children. Aunt Dahlia would claim that her mother did not want her and considered her replaceable. She would insist that she was the only person that Freya could rely on to always care for her. Her version of care was teaching Freya about how to use her magic. She claimed that she wanted her to be strong, so she could defeat her enemies. But also, to make herself stronger, she chained Freya's magic to hers. By connecting their magic, Freya's magic became stronger but Dahlia, she became immensely powerful.
Not long after, she used her new power to attack a nearby village that had been threatening to run them off because of their witchcraft. In response, Dahlia slaughtered the entire village. It was Freya's first practical lesson. She was never to yield to those weaker. Dahlia was a strict, relentless teacher who displayed a complete disregard for the lives of anybody who stood in her way. Freya would learn many things from her but she'd suffer a great deal under her aunt's hands.
For the first few years after she had been taken away, she had been utterly convinced that her father would come and rescue her. But sadly, he never did. She didn't condemn him for it. Instead, she condemned her mother. For she had no doubt that she lied to him and told him that Freya was dead. As she grew up, her love for her father never wavered but her love for her mother would become tainted by resentment for allowing her to be taken away by Dahlia.
When it came to her younger siblings, she held no negative feelings towards any of them. Unlike her aunt, she did not consider them her replacements. They were her family regardless of how they came to be. They were innocent and played no part in Mother's betrayal. Instead, she wished that she could be a part of their lives. Thanks to Dahlia keeping track of Mother's bloodline, she knew that she had five younger siblings besides Finn but nothing else. She desperately wanted to know more about them. Unfortunately, her escape attempts were always thwarted.
Nonetheless, Freya never gave up on trying to escape her aunt's grasp, so she could sail away toward her family's village across the ocean. However, as she aged, she became more methodical and cunning in her attempts. Over time, it became somewhat of a twisted game between Freya and her aunt to see who could outwit the other. Sadly, Freya was constantly outmaneuvered in their game.
One day when Freya was a fully grown woman, she was coming back from collecting herbs from the surrounding forest of their latest abode when she found the place demolished. Her aunt standing in the middle of the wreckage and she was beyond livid. Freya had never seen her aunt so enraged. It was beyond frightening.
