"Rise and shine!" a voice called out loudly.
The next second, I felt a flood of light brighten the room and I snuggled deeper into the sheets. I groaned when my sheets were stripped off of me and shivered as the cold air hit me.
"What are you doing?!" I looked up at Lillian, my eyes only half open. She grinned.
"It's your first day of school silly! Come on! Get up!"
I felt a nauseous feeling in the pit of my stomach. Slowly, I pulled myself up from my bed and headed toward the bathroom.
"Hurry up or we'll be late!"
I grunted at her. I don't know why, but getting interrupted during my precious sleeping time usually puts me in a cranky mood. Not to mention, I kicked everything in my sleep. Force of habit. Totally impossible to break.
I looked in the mirror and was horrified to see my long brown hair completely messed up. I combed it roughly, trying to get the tangles straightened. After brushing my teeth and face, I walked back out to Lillian to find her holding a blue and white uniform, yes, a uniform, complete with a blouse, skirt, and socks. I also noticed she was also wearing one. Wow. I must be more sleep lagged than I thought. How could I have not noticed that?
"Please tell me that that's not required," I said, annoyed.
"It's not required."
"Really?"
"No," she grinned and threw the uniform at me. It hit me smack in the face and dropped to the floor. Ow. "That was a perfect shot Emma," she frowned.
"Sorry, still half asleep." I picked up the uniform, dusting it off and went to the bathroom to change. After I had changed, I gathered my school materials and my schedule.
Lillian was practically bouncing to death in anticipation. She looped her arm around mine and steered me towards the staircase.
"Wait. What class do you have first?" she asked, stopping.
"Um, it says I have AP Chemistry," I scanned my eyes over the schedule. "But I think Evelyn said she's assigning a student to take me around."
"What? I could've done that," Lillian pouted with a crestfallen face. Then she did a double take. "Ew. Did you just say AP Chem? Gross," she crinkled her nose. I sighed.
"I'll see you later. I'm gonna try to find Evelyn. She's um, somewhere I think," I looked around at the bustling crowd of students, some of which who were staring at me curiously. I turned Lillian. "Wanna show me the office?"
"Of course. You can't do anything without your awesome sidekick," she mentioned dramatically. I rolled my eyes, but smiled.
"Well let's go then."
"Okay. I think they're on the 2nd floor. Here, come on. Shit. I'm gonna be late," she looked at her phone panicking. "Hurry Em."
That name threw me off a bit. Em? I never had a nickname before. I felt a strange rush of emotion for Lillian. I didn't have many friends when I was living with my aunt. She grabbed my arm and practically dragged me to the office. I was out of breath by the time we got there and most of the students were already gone from the halls.
"I think we turned about 50 times," I said breathing heavily.
"Yeah, well the school is pretty big. You'll get used to it though," she said breezily, her face completely at ease. She knocked loudly and I slapped her arm. She gave me an annoyed look.
"What?"
"People are in class."
"So?"
"So, you're too loud." I crossed my arms.
