Narrator POV
On the main streets of the encanto, a small group of kids were playing tag.
"I've got you, Lory!"
A little boy with greyish eyes shouted. As a girl a bit younger than him pouted.
"Hey! No give backs!"
She said, and looked over her shoulder. A girl in pink was spotted by the boy as a result.
She started running as she new she was spotted. And soon to be caught.
"There you are! You can't escape now Isabelle!"
The boy said and started running after her. As "Lory" laughed at "Isabelle" as she tried to get away but failed.
"Hahaha! Ok, ok, I get it! Now get off, my abuela will be mad if my clothes get dirty."
The boy let her go and helped her up. Realising "Lory" was already far from their reach.
The three kids played till the sun was starting to set. Not paying any mind to the time.
A few hours go by, when they hear the boys mother call for him.
"Sergio, sweetie! Dinners ready, come in and wash your hands!"
The little boy pouted and apologised for having to leave. Giving a hug to the two girls.
Soon the girls had to go too. To prepare for dinner with their family.
The three kids really liked hanging out. Always sharing toys, and showing each other the things they recently learned.
"And I recently learned how to whistle! How cool is that!"
Said Sergio enthusiasticly to his good friends.
"Can you show us? I want to hear it!"
"Isabelle" practically shouted in their ears.
"Can you be a little quieter? I'm going deaf just listening to you!"
"Lory" said holding her ears. Crearly showing annoyance by her cousins constant loudness.
"Sorry, anyway. Can you?"
"Yeah, why would I say so if i didn't want to show you?"
They laughed and then watched him show off his new talent.
As the years went by. None of them got tired of hanging out. They still loved hanging out like the old times.
However, the boy had to leave when his parents decided to move away.
Both of the girls tried convincing his parents to stay, but it didn't work.
Eventually they parted ways. Now it was just the girls.
But not everything turned to be like they thought.
"Isabelle" and "Lory" both had many responsibilities. Taking care of their younger siblings. And helping their parents.
They wouldn't admit it. But they grew distant. Not having much time to hang out.
Not that they would do so. The years really changed both of them.
"Isabelle" became the golden child and the role model for good kid. Her popularity was only growing by the day.
"Lory" however became more reserved and quiet. Her gift making it hard to socialise.
On the other hand. Sergio became a loner. His new home didn't have kids his age. Just adults, and after a while a couple of toddlers.
He had the responsibility of taking care of the orphaned kids, when the war broke out.
He adopted a little girl. And raised her like his own.
When the war came to an end, a lot of villagers moved to other places. Much safer.
But to their suprise the was was started again. With enemy troops attacking randomly in unexpected areas.
The little girl Sergio raised was a victim of those attacks.
He fought against the enemy and they were called back to base after a few days.
Wounded by his daughters death. He swore to protect those he cherishes.
When he saw Mirabel, he immediately recognised her. Instead of tearing at her visible wounds from her lack of gift.
Or questioning why she ran away. He decided to keep her safe and teach her all he knows.
Back in the encanto, not much has changed.
Besides the undenieable tension. There was not much to see in the casita.
Isabella or "Isabelle" found the plush and the note Mirabel left her that night.
She outright denies getting a letter from her younger sister to her family.
Even though she sleeps with the stuffed bear. She would never admit ever receiving it.
She deeply regretted all the things she has done to make her sister feel bad. But theres nothing she can do now. She's gone and not comig back.
Luisa doesn't let people know how she really feels. She doesn't understand why Mirabel left. And she can't deny thinking about what she could have done to prevent this.
Abuela doesn't speak of Mirabel or let people search outside of the encanto.
Julieta and Pepa are not happy with abuelas opinions and regularly disagree.
No matter how they all deny it. History repeats itself in the family. Just like Bruno, they start to outright resent Mirabel for leaving.
But, one day. A strange letter is left on the bed for Isabela by a pigeon.
As she sees the senders name. She is shocked. And immediately tells the news to Dolores.
"Dolores, I got a letter from Sergio. My room at midnight, we might have news about him."
She whispered to the wall. Knowing her cousin heard her words.
