4. compromise
"Akshara stop with this, tumhara guitar lag raha hai mujhe."
"Mujhe practice karni hai, main kya karu ki main right-handed."
Aarohi kept the book aside, she was trying to grasp whatever she could but with Akshara's huge guitar hindering her eyesight and her left hand swinging with her, this was getting impossible. She could neither concentrate, nor could Akshara practice with Aarohi not co-operating with her, and both of them only argued for the next half hour.
"Aaru yaar, do you have to study on a Saturday?"
"Well, do you have to join every singing competition there is in town?"
Akshara glared at her sister, keeping her guitar aside, "I want a career in music, I have to sharpen my skills."
"Well, too bad, because I want to get this scholarship and become the smartest, IAS, IPS, everything."
"Ek kaam kar, CM aur PM hi ban jaa," Akshara shook her head, scoffing, "President hi ban jaa, aur kya." With that she took her guitar back and Aarohi dodged the handle by jerking away.
"Politics main hi jaana hai toh padhu kyu, weirdo."
Akshara teased her with her tongue and Aarohi rolled her eyes, once again, Akshara tried strumming the guitar but Aarohi refused to let go of her left hand and that lead to tugging and pulling and Aarohi's book fell on the floor, the pencils falling from her pouch.
"This is not happening," Aarohi sighed, this was harder than their parents anticipated. "Akshara, this is stupid, aise toh hum kuch kar hi nahi payenge."
Akshara gulped, Aarohi was right, because this way nothing could be done and she really wanted to play at the café in the evening. She wanted to win the prize, and she had not even practiced the song yet, procrastinating it till the last day but then this happened.
"Compromise kar sakte hai..."
Aarohi looked at Akshara, confused, "compromise?" She chuckled, looking sideways at her elder sister, "you know the meaning of compromise?"
To that Akshara pulled one of Aarohi's pigtail, and the little one shut up immediately. "Zyaada bol mat, warna raat main aake teri choti kaat lungi," Aarohi was always a little scared of her elder sister, she was always onto things that Aarohi would never even think of doing.
"What compromise are you talking about?" Aarohi asked, shaking her head and changing the subject. "What do you suggest?"
"It is almost noon," Akshara eyed the wall-clock, there was ten minutes for 12 pm, "I have the competition at seven, that gives us roughly 4-5 hours, give and take, lunch ka time nikal de toh." Aarohi nodded, listening intently to her sister, "I need two hours to get the song right and you can get two hours to study in your library, why do you have to go the library again?"
"Woh books re-issue karna hai aur thode return bhi karne hai, warna fine lagegi." Aarohi softened a bit, she looked at her sister who was listening to her, "pocket money use nahi kar sakti, woh agle hafte..."
"Agle hafte kya?"
Aarohi's heart broke when her sister did not remember that next week was her birthday, but Aarohi hardly reacted so she was able to hide her saddness. "Tu bol na?" Akshu snapped in front of her sister, "we can go two hours now, I'll sit in that stupid library of yours and I promise to sit still..."
"Oh please, Akshara," Aarohi shook her head, cutting her off, "you cannot sit still for five minutes without either jumping, humming or singing, and you are telling me that you will sit silently with me for two hours? No way."
"Oye Miss America," Akshara snapped her finger again, "that is my issue, I will handle it, in return you have to sit with me for practice for two hours, and since my right hand," She raised her right wrist and in reflex, Aarohi's left hand was raised too, "is now joined with your left, you have to bear with me while I play, because I am right-handed."
"Of course I know you are right handed,"
"Nahi, mujhe laga tujhe pata nahi hoga."
Aarohi sighed, "I'm not you, I remember everything."
"Well geez," Akshara jumped off the bed, "no need to get so defensive." She packed her guitar in the bag, "are you gonna help?" Akshara asked her sister.
"Glad you asked," Aarohi chirped a smile, and it soon faded into a frown, "No."
Akshara shook her head, but she managed to pack her guitar while Aarohi now put all the books in her bag, there were not much of her studying books but she did have an awful lot to return to the library.
The girls headed out of their room, one had her guitar on her back, music notes in her hand, the other had her bag filled, head held high as they headed towards the hall.
"Kaha chali toli?" Naira asked working on her laptop, Karthik was in the kitchen, making some kachoris to lighten the mood of his girls'. "Where to?" Karthik peeped out of the kitchen, his eyes on the girls and their mother.
"To the city library," Akshara replied, while putting on her sandals, Aarohi was trying to put on her shoes but Akshara was not letting her. "Aaru needs to study, I need to practice, so yea..."
Aarohi pulled her down instantly, and she quickly put on her shoes and tied her lace, Karthik walking out of the kitchen. "And lunch?" He asked, Naira shut her laptop and kept it aside, "I made some lovely kachoris for you two, you like it right?"
"We do," Aarohi replied softly, "Papa can you pack it for us? Hum library main kha lenge."
"Okay," Naira was both smiling and frowning, "and when are you two to return?"
"Directly in the cafe," Aarohi replied, "we'll meet you there, all cool?"
Naira and Karthik hid their excitement and nodded, the former handed Akshara the spare mobile they had. "In case of emergencies," Akshara nodded, plopping it in her jeans pocket and Aarohi bade her parents a goodbye only for Akshara to freeze in her place.
"Abh kya hua?"
Akshara widened her eyes, "I need to go potty," She said, making their parents chuckle, and Aarohi to be horrified, "I have to..."
"ARGHHH!"
And with that Aarohi held her breath while Akshara ran into the washroom, her sister tugging along.
