7. bhaiya
"um..." Akshara wiped the drool off her face, and rubbed her eyes, feeling out of place. Why was she on a wooden table instead of her bed. "Aaru, hum kaha hai?"
"Library," Aarohi replied, eating another bite of the kachori and watched Akshara yawn out loud, waking up with an imprint of the wooden desk on her face.
"I had such a good nap," Akshara yawned and opened her eyes slowly, "what's the time Aaru?"
Aarohi looked at her sister, and immediately packed the tiffin box and collected all her school supplies in her bag, as Akshara frowned. "Kya hua?"
To that Aarohi gulped, already covering her right hand on her ear, "6 in the evening..."
It took the sleepy Akshara some ten seconds to comprehend the meaning of that and she widened her eyes. "6 what!" She screamed, garnering attention from the library, "WHAT."
Aarohi nodded, "it is 6."
"My competition starts at 7, it takes half hour to reach home. Aur maine practice bhi nahi ki," Akshara yelled, scared and anxious and a lot angry, "why couldn't you wake me up! Tune ye sab jaan buch ke Kiya hai na?"
Aarohi gasped at the accusations, "excuse me, main tujhe 4 baje se lekar utha rahi thi," She pointed at her sister as they hurriedly ran away from the library with their things, "you hit me twice and almost bit my hand once. I swear I tried..."
Akshara shook her head, both of them halting a rickshaw and hurriedly got in, instructing him to take them directly to the café. "Iss rickshaw fair ke paise nahi hai," Akshara searched her pockets, "shayad girr gaye kahi."
The rickshaw driver looked at them both but Aarohi instructed him to keep riding, "aap chalaye uncle, mere Kairav bhaiya dedenge aapko." Aarohi told the rickshaw driver who continued the ride while Akshara met Aarohi's eyes. They had messaged Kairav to meet them at the café and to come with some money, while also requesting him to not inform their parents.
"Kairav bhaiya bohot daatenge." Akshu pouted, tensed with all the things happening, "he will tell mom and dad that we traveled so far for the library without anyone. I'm so grounded, argh." Akshara held her forehead with her free hand.
"Wait," Aarohi interrupted Akshara's breakdown, "that means I am grounded too? Next week is my birt..."
"No you are not going to be grounded." Akshara hissed at her sister, "choti ho, tumhe koi kuch nahi bolega, par mumma toh mujhe maar dalegi."
Aarohi pumped her hand in happiness only to get a cold stare from Akshara, and she slumped her shoulders, biting her tongue while they landed back in their area, and as expected, Kairav stood aside, waiting for them. The girls lowered their gaze at their brother's glares and Kairav paid the fare and then turned towards his sisters.
"You two have crossed a line today," Kairav looked at the two girls, Aarohi frowned at that but Akshara shut her eyes. If there was anything that affected the bold Akshu, it was Kairav's disappointment. "And what were you two thinking? Station ke paas? Dimaag kharab toh nahi hua hai tum dono ka?"
"Bhaiya aap chilla kyu rahe ho!" Aarohi spoke up, making Akshara and Kairav to now meet her eyes, "hum library gaye the, clubbing nahi. And if it is about the money you paid, I'll pay you back."
"Ek thapad lagaunga," Kairav raised his hand only to Akshara and Aarohi to take a step back, they expected their elder brother to give them a good thrashing but instead he threw his long arms around the girls, enveloping them in a hug which he never did. "Idiots," He grunted under his breath, but still hugged them and Akshara and Aarohi shrugged at each other, confused. "You two went alone so far, do you even know how risky it is."
"Par bhaiya," Akshara voiced softly, "hum dono akele kaise hue."
"Baccha, ho toh tum dono choti si," Kairav cupped Akshara's little face in one hand, the other he touched Aarohi's head, "who knows what could have happened, someone would have kidnaped you two, or taken advantage of you, maybe even worse. Do you know how scary it is to think about all this? Do you know how mom and dad would have felt if anything was to happen to any of you, and what would happen to me?" Kairav shook his head, pushing his spectacles on his nose, now angry again. "Aaru, next time you speak about money, I will slap you and Akshu, I am disappointed in you, because you are the eldest."
"Bhaiya.."
"Abh ghar chalo, jo hoga maa aur papa decide karenge."
To that Aarohi's eyes widened, and Akshara accepted defeat, "Par.."
"No more Aarohi, we are going home, I have to tell mom and dad about today's events."
Akshara agreed with a slight nod, all ready to follow their brother home but Aarohi did not like how her sister not once told them why they went so far to study plus if their parents heard this, they would ground Akshara for sure and the competition which was in less than half hour, something her sister was so hyped for, would also be taken away from her.
This cannot happen and hence Aarohi did what she thought best.
She stopped walking.
Since her hands were tied with Akshara's, the latter stopped walking and got pulled behind and since Akshara was holding Kairav's hand, he was abruptly pulled behind too.
"Kya?"
"Bhaiya, please," Aarohi requested, making her best set of puppy eyes, "please, do not punish Akshu for this, because I wanted to go to the station library and Akshara denied so many times but I threw a fit. All she did was listen to me," Aarohi lied very well, Akshara noted how convincing she looked, "if you take us away, Akshu will miss her competition and that would be unfair. I promise, show ke baad, main mom dad se baat kar lungi aur unki punishment bhi accept kar lungi, but abh cafe jaate hai, bhaiya please."
Akshara looked at her sister, did they wake up in an alternate dimension today?
