Once he had gathered his bearings and was 90% sure he wasn't asleep or hallucinating again, Adam got up off the couch to try and make some progress. There wouldn't be another Trial for a long time, according to the little watch he still had. He was relieved, to say the least. He left the room quickly and turned down the hall where the metal bars had been blocking his path. Only, there was one problem.
A Zombie stands in his way, and it had taken notice of him.
Defenseless and terrified, he ran back to the room he had been desperately trying to move on from before the thing could get a chance to eat his face off. Lucky, I know. things would be different if he had a sword with him.
He slammed the door shut and locked it, then turned around and pressed his back against the door. For once, the lock works in his favor. On the table in front of him lay a smaller, silve knife beside a corresponding shealth. He walked towards it and picked it up, doing a few test slashes. The blade itself was around 8 inches long. Tricky for killing a Zombie, but he could handle it. Probably.
Animalistic groans and shuffling could be heard from outsidse the door, and it was unsettling to say the least. Adam still wasn't 100% sure how to kill these things. Stabbing it in the heart should work, right?
He hesitated, pounding noises on the door not helping his nerves. His courage faltered, and then disappeared altogether. Maybe he could wait it out? Surely it would leave at some point. Yeah, he'll do that. Just a few hours, and he can take it on if it's still there by then.
A few hours crawled by, and sounds hadn't halted his whole time here. They resonated throughout his head and he was getting scared out of his wits. Doubt filled his mind on whether or not he could do this. What happened last time he trusted his own judgement? He noticed that the longer he lingered in one place without progressing, the thicker the air felt. It certainly wasn't helping him stay calm either. As much as he was trying to keep his hope alive and stay optimistic, his thoughts were turning dark and he found myself wondering how he would die if he were to never get out of this forsaken place. Things were looking bleak, to say the least.
So, in order to not choke on the air in this room, and to keep his spirits in check, Adam decided it was time to toughen up.
He took a long, deep breath, which quite the feat since the air was thick enough to cut with a knife. He stood up with shaky legs, both from the lingering soreness he had become accustomed to and from being more than a bit apprehensive about what he was about to do, and walked over towards the door. With a trembling hand, he slid the lock open. The knife was in his right hand and his left was poised over the doorknob, ready to turn it.
Adam threw the door open, but not before getting into a defensive position. Instantly, he was hit with a whoosh of normal air that seemed thin compared to what he just walked out of. It was indeed there, and it stared back at him with soulless black eyes. The teeth were yellowed, and the mouth was ringed with blood. It was just as, if not more terrifying as when he first caught a glimpse at it.
One thing he hadn't noticed was a "Hello, my name is:" sticker attacked to the front of the blood-splattered shirt. Underneath the printed wording was the word "Zombie" written in all capital letters and black ink.
Some part of his subcouncious told him something very valuable at a shockingly good time. The head. The head has to be it's weak spot. Before it could lunge at him, he made a quick swipe for the head with his knife.
But with Adam's luck, he missed.
Adam, how in the heck did you miss a Zombie that isn't moving.
How.
Groaning, it reached out for him with its green arms. The left had a gaping hole right below the elbow, exposing bone and tissue to the world.
