SALLY
The doors slid open and the doctor led me into another hospital room. This one had a CAT scanner and a monitor in front of it. The guards stopped by the doorway as we entered.
"Get on the bed,” the doctor instructed.
I swallowed, my hands quivered as my palms grew damp. "W-What do you want to d-do to me?" I stuttered.
The doctor pushed up his glasses and smiled. "I'm not going to hurt you, Sally. I just want to run some tests on you to determine your physical condition."
He motioned towards the bed and I glanced at the guards watching us with a hard glare on their faces. Their guns were pointing at the ground but I had a feeling it wouldn't take long for them to start pointing at me.
Dr Reynolds followed my line of vision and glanced behind him. "They won't harm you, be assured of that. As long as you do as you're told,” he gave me a meaningful look and I got the message.
Do as you were told. I nodded and got on the bed. He moved towards the monitor and pressed some keys on the machine. The bed moved back, sliding into a tubular machine. I tried to calm my racing heart as a blue light moved over my body. The bed slid out of the machine but I stayed down till the doctor spoke up.
"You can get up now, Sally."
I got off the bed and stood there as he checked the monitor. His brows furrowed in concentration as he looked over my vitals.
"You seem to be in perfect condition," he looked up and gave me a small smile. "Now, you're going to follow the guards to the next room where we'll test your ability."
"My ability?" I asked dumbly.
"Yes, your power," he said without blinking like he was talking about the weather.
Just yesterday, I was a normal kid living a normal life and now I was supposed to be this thing with abilities. Mom and dad had promised me we were going to figure it out together. Where were they?
"I-I want to see my parents." I clenched my palms beside me.
"I'm afraid that's not possible."
"I'm not going into that room until I see my parents." The guards cocked their guns and I moved back.
"I don't think you have a choice here, Sally," Dr Reynolds said. My palms tingled. There was a shift in the air, I could feel it.
"Now, shall we?" Dr Reynolds looked down at the watch on his wrist and pressed a button on it, the doors slid open.
"I'm not leaving until I see my parents," I repeated with force this time.
Dr Reynolds stood up from his stool and motioned to the guards. "Take her,” he instructed and they moved forward.
"Stay back," I said but they only moved closer.
For all my bravado earlier, I was just a little kid in front of these men. Just one click of their gun and I was gone. My heartbeat quickened and I moved closer to the machine for protection. I took up a defensive position as they moved closer, one arm curved in front of me as I held the other out.
The guards moved menacingly upon me and then when they were a few inches away from me, something strange happened. A force stopped them and they flew backward, hitting the floor. The air around me shimmered, something was blocking them. Dr. Reynolds stared at me in surprise and I looked down at my hands. I did that.
The guards stood up now looking pissed off. They picked up their guns and hit the air in front of them. It hit an invisible shield and a thud sounded across the room. The shield shimmered as they kept hitting it. It was straining to hold it up, my hand hurt. Cracks formed in the shield, if they kept hitting it, it would break apart.
The tingling sensation increased, spreading across my arms until it was all around me. I could feel it everywhere. Then I got angry. They turned me into this and tried to attack me when all I wanted was to see my parents. An energy built inside me and I didn't hold back. I let it consume me and I unleashed it. The guns they held above them crumbled and turned to dust as I held my hands out in front of me. They both looked down at their feet in shock and looked up at me.
My eyes darkened. I rose off the floor, tendrils of my hair flying around my face as I looked down at the guards and the doctor. They all looked up at me in trepidation. Their fear was painted vividly across their faces and I smiled. It was palpable, I could feel it just as I could feel everything around me and I enjoyed it. I clenched my fists and the guards grabbed their throats, choking as they looked up at me. Their eyes bulged out as they wheezed.
"Please." One of them choked out.
Watching him beg was fulfilling, just a moment ago I was the one cowering before them and their guns. I squeezed harder, clenching my palms tightly and they fell lifeless to the floor.
I looked at the doctor and he moved back in fear. He pressed a button on his watch and an alarm blared out across the room.
"Stop, Sally. I'm not your enemy." He held out his hands in front of him in a protective stance.
The energy around me got stronger, the sensation in my body got hotter. It was too much to bear but I wanted to punish the doctor because he made me feel scared. I raised my hand and lifted him into the air.
He shouted as he looked down at the floor in panic. "Sally, stop. You don't want to do this."
But I wanted to. I wanted to tear him apart. I wanted to tear the whole room apart. Everything and everyone would feel my wrath.
A shocking pain sliced through my skull and I groaned, grabbing my head. It increased, throbbing and spreading all over my body and I screamed. The doctor fell to the floor with a thud.
The machines in the room started beeping, the blare of the alarm increased and I shook as I fell to the floor. Something trickled down my nose as the doors slid open and more guards marched into the room with their guns held out in front of them. My vision got blurry as I looked down at my white jumpsuit, it was stained with spots of red. I closed my eyes and let the pain consume me as my head hit the floor.
"What are you?" Dr Reynolds whispered as he moved closer to me. That was the last thing I heard before everything went blank.
