To The Very End: We Keep Moving Forward

“Will the fuel we have get us to Fort Salta?”

Onyankopon nods. “I promise you I will get us there. This flying boat that Hange got us was the commander’s final hope. I will get us to that base! No matter what! So please... Promise me that you will stop the rumbling. No matter what it takes.”

I nod and pat Onyankopon on the shoulder. “I’m counting on you, Onyankopon.” I walk out of the cockpit to what remains of us. Their eyes turn to me, something that I am used to, but they’re no longer looking to me as the most level-headed of the group or Hange’s assistant. I’m now the Commander of the Scouting Regiment, whether I like it or not. “Okay… Let’s discuss our plan. Armin, what you got for me?”

Armin gestures to the drawing he made. “The Founding Titan, as Captain Pieck saw it.”

“Yes, though it’s not as if I got a good look at it. basically, it’s a stupidly big pile of moving bones... like a bug. Normally, the body controlling it would be in its nape.”

“But we can’t be sure,” Levi says, “considering what the Warhammer Titan did. In other words, we don’t know where Eren is.”

“Even if we don’t, we could always blow the whole thing away. Just like the way you flattened Liberio’s navy port and left nothing behind. Your Colossus Titan could do it.”

I nod. “And we’ve been on the receiving end of Bertholdt’s use of that power twice. It is possible.”

“True… That would be the most effective way to do it, but only if we’ve tried and failed to have a dialogue with Eren. Only if that...is the only way left to stop him.”

Armin looks to me as he says that, knowing how I feel about dialogue. That dialogue got several Scouts including Moblit killed back four years prior, even if it wasn’t the direct cause of it. Yet, I see why he looks at me now. Not because he wants to have a dialogue with Eren, but because it is Eren. We didn’t reach him in the restaurant, so I have my doubts… “Armin, I will agree to that because I’m your friend, but as the commander, I must have you understand that if that fails…”

“I understand. I won’t challenge it any further if it fails.”

‘I’m fine with us having a last resort,” Levi speaks, “but Eren’s controlling the Founding Titan through Zeke, right? Can’t we stop the rumbling if we just went and killed Zeke?”

“I thought of that as well, since we never saw Zeke’s remains by the Beast Titan, if there were any to remain, that is. He could be with Eren.”

“I’m not certain, but that’s what Hange predicted.”

“We don’t know Zeke’s location either.”

“Then we just have to find that furry bastard inside those bones. I’ll stop Zeke. Just… Lend me your strength.”

Jean sighs. “Lieutenant, Commander… Of course. We had to kill hordes of our allies to get this flying boat in the air… We can’t allow that...to be a meaningless slaughter. This is all...in order to stop the rumbling. I’ll do anything it takes.”

“I,” Conny starts, “I shot and killed Samuel, Joshua got Daz… I sliced up those faces I know until they were unrecognizable all while they called me a traitor… While they kept telling me they were saving the world… Hey, Reiner. You, Bertholdt, Annie, it must’ve been awful for you.”

“My sins...are beyond redemption. I doubt I’ll ever forgive myself for what I did, even if I manage to save what’s left of humanity. So,” Reiner leans down and holds Conny’s shoulder, “well, let’s at least save the rest of humanity.”
