Daisy looked at her son, who lay cradled in her arms. He lay silent, smiling up at his mother, donning his tiny sailor cap. Daisy giggled, for he looked so cute.
"Welcome to the world, Elliot," she said to him.
Daisy walked with her baby boy to the window, where he looked out at the sky. The sun floated high above the horizon, the rather empty sky taking a shade of blue so close to white. The ocean lay below the horizon, the mass of green and blue glittering beautifully. The boy's eyes sparkled like the sea when he saw it, and he reached out to it, as if trying to get there. Daisy giggled softly.
"You really like the ocean, don't ya?" she said.
Later that day, Daisy decided Elliot should see the ocean, so she took him out to the beach side of their apartment building. She sat him down where the coming tide just reached his tiny webbed toes. Elliot reached for the saltwater as it retreated back to the sea, and looked a little sad when he couldn't touch it. He would have stood on his feet, but he didn't know how to walk. Instead, he only managed to scoot himself slightly forward. The tide came once more, the wave that came to the shore a bit bigger than the last. Elliot's feet were engulfed in the foamy ocean water, and he smiled and giggled. He grabbed at the water with his hands, and felt it on them. He looked at his small feathery hands, which were now covered in water, streams dripping down his arms. He looked back up at the sea, seeing its sparkly waves break the horizon line, which was now very red, and the sky above it a dark blue. The sun had already set. Elliot turned to his mother, who smiled at him as she picked him up.
"Come on Elliot," she said gently as she did. "Let's get you cleaned up."
Daisy washed the saltwater off Elliot when they were back inside. Unlike most children, Elliot didn't rebel. He actually liked the feeling of the water on his body; it almost felt natural. Daisy was rather surprised at that. After that, she laid him in his crib, and he started to fall asleep. Daisy smiled.
"Good night Elliot," she whispered as she bent down to kiss his cheek. "See you tomorrow."
As his mother left the room, Elliot's young and eager mind was on the ocean. He wanted to get back to it, he felt like it was calling him. However, he was rather tired from the day, and knew his mom was the only way he could see the ocean again. He turned around on his stomach and looked out the window through the rails of his crib. The crescent moon stood in the middle of the dark blue star-strewn sky, scattered with stars. The sea below the horizon sparkled just as much as it did during the day, now more blue than green. The stars' gentle light filled Elliot's eyes, and before he knew it, he was fast asleep.
