In the town of Gravesfield, a five storied mansion stood against the light of the rising sun over the poor town. The sun rose on the same tidy front gardens and lit up the brass door front door. It crept into their living room, with photographs on the mantelpiece really showed how much time had passed. There had been lots of pictures of a black-haired girl wearing different colored clothes — but now there are photographs showing a tall black-haired girl riding her first bicycle, on a carousel at the fair, playing a basketball game with her father, being hugged and kissed by her mother. The room held no sign at all that another girl lived in the house, too.
The sun shone onto a massive, neglectful garden that was surrounded by iron gates that's reaches up to the tree branches. The garden is like a miniature forest with its tall and leafy trees, the overgrown bushes and flowerbeds, the long and swaying grass, and one or two creeks that streaked across the untamed garden. Despite the birds that had made nests in the branches of the trees and the small woodland critters living in the untamed garden, there's also a sign of a human being that has been living in the garden.
A orange tent with a single sleeping bag and camping items sitting inside inside the tent and by tent. There's also a doused fireplace with a nearby bucket of water and an outside bathroom for the owner's private business. But the owner of the mentioned camping supplies and items wasn't there at the moment.
One of the sunbeams outlined a tall and slender sixteen year old girl from the branches who was leaning against a tree, silently watching the morning sky and a flock of birds with a longing expression. Her hair ran down her shoulders like a wavy blonde and unique, bright azure-streaked waterfall. Her eyes are sparkling blue as the sky lined with the sea. She was wearing a short-sleeved blue shirt and pants, on her feet was white socks and short brown boots. The only accessory she has is around her neck is a silvery beaded necklace with a wolf tooth. The girl's name is Marina Evans.
Marina barely has any memories of her past, but she wasn't allowed to ask questions about her late parents. It was probably because her aunt and uncle envied them and hated them. Even her cousin, Sophia, hated Marina's parents and she doesn't even know them. Whenever Marina had asked about them, she just get snapped at and send her outside as a timeout. She was sent to live with her relatives as her only family connection, but they made it clear that they hated her and she just feels disappointed with them. She doesn't have a rich or pampered life as her cousin, or rather a descent life of any child. She spends most of her life in the neglected garden after she had became eleven years old, she was blamed for something that wasn't Marina's fault and was sent to live in the garden with a bagful of camping supplies, cleaning supplies, clothes, and books.
She enjoys her independence from huge crowds and loud noise. But sometimes, Marina tends to feel a little lonely. The only friends that she has are the animals and birds of the garden, the sun, the moon, the storms, and the stars. Marina just wish she could have have actually friends that are human and are in love with books as much as she does, but respects her privacy and independence.
But when Marina looked up, she soon saw something astonishing in the sky.
What was happening in the sky? Whatever it was, it was the stunning and amazing thing she'd ever seen in her whole entire life. She never seen anything like this before. It was so beautiful. She could count more hues and shades than in the box of paints and watercolors that she had seen a few weeks ago. Shades of sapphire, violet, magenta, and gold shimmered and shined, like a giant rainbow had blanketed the sky and stretched out over the land.
It was barely morning, but the night stars continued to sparkle like diamonds. Despite the lightness of the morning sky, they were so bright and clear like distant diamonds sparkling in the dawning sky. There's was a constellation in shape of a red cardinal that seemed to send Marina's heart fluttering with hope and care. Another constellation had been formed. It was twinkling in the shape of a wolf, the sight of it made her feel brave and free. Another bright light danced across the sky. These stars formed a constellation that looked like a eagle that made her feel loved and adventurous. Lastly, there was a bright constellation shaped like a wolf that made her feel instinctive and empathetic.
Are those Northern Lights? Why are they so bright? How did they form those shapes?
Marina shook her head at her thoughts and gotten up to walk by herself. She felt a good deal of loneliness washed over her and she gave a weary sigh as Marina started walking by herself. She looked around as she felt her loneliness fade away from her heart and became full again when Marina saw a father fox walking by with a piece of meat hanging from his jaws.
She followed the fox — but being mindful of her distance — to his den that was dug between the roots of a tree. The fox's mate stepped out of the den, followed by two adorable and hyper fuzzy brown and reddish fox cubs. The father fox gave the meat to the cubs and licked his mate's muzzle. Marina smiled wistfully at the family of foxes, wishing she has a family that actually likes her for being her. She heard chattering behind her and looked over her shoulder to see a gray squirrel climbing up a tree. Marina continued looking around through the garden and smiled when she saw a woodpecker nearby, pecking on a nearby tree and making a hole in the nearby tree. A couple of birds fluttered around the tops of the trees, singing their songs. Marina said her farewell to the foxes before she started walking away from the fox family and continued exploring. She stepped back when she saw a mother rabbit moving her babies towards the nearest colony of rabbits.
She continued walking till she reached the flowered bushes that usually covers her from the outside world with the fences, but she knows a secret spot in the hedges for her to see the outside world. Marina walked gracefully around the flowered bushes and found the spot that gives her a view of the outside world.
Marina crawled through the bushes and sat down in front of the hole, the a few white flowers gently falling over her as the wind began to pick up. She looked down at the small town of Gravesfield, feeling both sad and lonely. It wasn't much, but it was better than nothing. She had always wondered what the world was like outside of the garden.
But she heard a soft trill behind, making her turn around away from the sight of the town to see something that almost made her jumped and yelled in shock. She saw a glowing bird that resembles a red cardinal with a glowing, ghostly white light radiating from it. The bird felt magical to Marina.
Its eyes shone with compassion and understanding as it looked at her, it made her loose her urge to jump and yell. Marina felt her eyes widened when she saw this glowing bird. The bird started flying away from her and gestured for her to follow him, which encouraged Marina to follow the glowing bird.
She ran after the flying bird and followed it to the deepest parts of the garden, where the tallest trees grew and casted long shadows. The bird came to a stop and landed on a branch. It met Marina's eyes and pointed its beak to the ground.
She came closer to see something was poking out of the ground. Marina started carefully digging it out, feeling curious and uncertain of what she'll find.
That's when she had found the item that was dug underground. It looked like some type of music/treasure box. It is ornamented with gold and two blue gems. She guessed it was a red cardinal in a forest, praising the gems behind an engraved sun design. Marina tilted her head curiously at the box and looked at the red cardinal spirit, who remained on the branch and continued watching her.
Marina looked around and put on her backpack that's filled with her brushes, shampoo and conditioner, clothes, and books that a friend had given her. But her friend was not allowed to visit her anymore and Marina's relatives had forbade her to make contact with other humans.
She met the red cardinal spirit's eyes for a while before she opened the chest, thought felt a tingle of warmth go through her as Marina opened the chest. Marina's eyes landed on a pair of items in the chest that confused her to no end. There was a sparkling silver key, a small blue vial, and a brown book with a golden cardinal bird on it.
Marina attached the key and the vial to her necklace, she also took hold of the book and put it in her backpack.
In front of her, Marina saw colors swirling around within the box like magic and started to become bigger. Marina stepped back, warily, and watched as the red cardinal spirit disappeared into thin air.
"What the heck?" said Marina, feeling more confused than scared.
Suddenly, the wind began to pick up and the colors in the box started to increase in size. In a massive flash of light, Marina has been swallowed by the light and had disappeared with her belongings.
All that remained was Marina's empty tent.
