I stuck my hand inside the bag of dill pickle chips, pulling out a handful and dropping them into my mouth. The sourness of the chips was sort of a high for me. I got a kick out of eating handful after handful to see how much I could take. I loved the rush, so I could fuck around and finish a whole bag in one sitting if I didn't watch myself.
"Ichiyo, get your bag, we're getting ready to go," Mom said as she came down the stairs.
"'Kay," I said, but I just said that to shut her up, as I had already disregarded what she said and quickly directed my attention back to the chips. I wasn't one for following instructions, no matter how trivial, because that just wasn't how I was. I didn't like authority and something inside me was too stubborn and prideful to do anything anyone told me to do. My inner voice insisted that I lived my life on my terms. It got me into a lot of trouble, but at least I was living my life for me and I was enjoying it. The most that I could, anyway.
Mom walked outside and closed the door behind her. I heard the revving of her car's engine, but even that didn't motivate me to get my backpack so that we could leave.
The quick padding of little feet across Mom's wooden floor caught my attention and soon Xiorra appeared in the kitchen.
"School, it's time for school!" she cheered.
I applauded Xiorra for having such an enthusiastic attitude towards school. I personally didn't really think that I needed it and didn't like dealing with the teachers. It was only more authority for me to clash with.
Xiorra saw me with my hand in the chip bag and stopped her cheering.
"Can I have some?" she asked, holding both of her hands out. I was going to be a prick and tell her to get lost, but I decided that maybe the dill chips would help balance out the sugar rush from the cereal she ate. I wasn't at all sure that that was correct logic, but it was worth a shot.
I poured some into her little hands, just enough for her to quickly scarf down. She said, "thank you," and dumped all of them into her mouth, licking the dill flavoring off of her fingers.
"Go wash your hands," I told her. She didn't respond, only walked back down the hallway she came from.
Yume came into the living area after Xiorra left, scrolling away on his phone. He was always stuck on it and I was sure that that was his way of getting out of not talking to anyone. He wasn't socially awkward but he wasn't the best with people, and basically avoided all conversation unless someone was speaking directly to him about something that he deemed important.
It was annoying to have such polar opposites for siblings—Yume, who barely ever talked, and Xiorra who moved at a million miles per minute and was a big ball of energy. I would say that I was the only normal one around here, but that would be a lie.
The front door swung open and Mom's head peeked in.
"I told you guys, come on, you gotta get to school! Ichiyo. I told you to get your bag and you're still standing there with a bag of chips in your hands. Hurry up!" she said, and closed the door behind her once again.
