It was a normal June afternoon for Auden, with headphones squished into her ears, her body swaying and popping to the music threatening to damage her hearing if she kept listening at the horrendous volume she was maintaining. But it was never loud enough. Never intense enough.

Auden always wanted more.

"Are you even listening to me?"

Auden was roughly shoved back into reality when her best friend Emmie pulled Auden's left earbud free. An irritation on the verge of something lethal overcame Auden. She rarely got irritated with people, especially Emmie. But something about taking someone's earbuds out and sending them sprawling back into reality without even the slightest warning, was just plain cruel, in Auden's opinion.

"Hey," Auden whined, snatching back her earbud and scowling at her best friend.

Emmie's deep brown eyes appraised Auden with what looked to be exasperated defeat.

"I thought we agreed, no work while we are hanging out."

Auden immediately felt bad, not even having realized she was ignoring her friend.

It was just so natural these days, for Auden to throw her earbuds in and get lost. When Emmie asked to go for a coffee Auden had instinctively put them in when they started walking. At first she'd put volume on low, desiring pleasant background music, but then she got caught up and one thing let to another and next thing she knew she was in another world.

"There's this really cool song I've been working on and the coreo to it is going to be insane—"

"Auden," Emmie said, brown eyes wide with expectancy. Waiting for Auden to see just how absorbed she was.

"Sorry." Auden tucked the earbuds into her pocket and gave her friend one hundred percent of her attention. "I'm back, I promise. No more talk about work."

Emmie sighed, as they took a seat together in their favorite coffee shop on campus, The Bean. It was this adorable little building with a vintage feel and a small apothecary inside. They always perched on the bar by the window together and people watched.

"Go ahead, I know you want to tell me all about it. And truthfully, I need to know." Emmie sipped her sugary cappichino, tucking a strand of her short blonde hair behind her ear while Auden sipped her plain black coffee. Auden liked to think of it as the bitter nectar that kept the gears slick, and the creative pendulum swaying.

Auden grinned. "It's this new song, called "Loveless" it's one of the greatest songs I've made to date."

Auden could talk about music all day. And sometimes she did.

"And the song has hints of contemporary in it, which you know I love—"

"I still don't understand how you handle making songs for other people. I mean you aren't even the one that gets to perform them."

Auden shrugged. "I don't mind really. I know the work is mine. It's cool just to see it come to life."

"Yeah but don't you ever wish you were the one performing?"

"Honestly, sometimes. But then I think about how much freedom I have." Auden gestured to the coffee shop around them. Two other patrons sat in the little shop, and all the people passing by the window weren't even glancing their direction.

They were just two normal girls. Inhabiting UCLA's campus in Los Angeles, a city of wonder. Basically invisible amongst the noise.

"I'm not being followed by paparazzi. I don't have to worry about hate comments on my twitter. Or how I dress in public. I like my job."

Emmie shook her head. "I still think it's crazy. All those famous pop stars not even creating their own songs."

"It's the way the world works," Auden said, taking another sip of her coffee.

"So who's the song for?" Emmie pressed.

"You know I'm not allowed to tell you," Auden laughed. Emmie already knew the rules, but asked every time anyway.

Auden worked part time for a company known as Slowave Studios while she attended UCLA. She created songs for famous stars in the music industry. She started working as an intern at the studio when she first arrived at UCLA. After a year or two of paying her dues all the hard work payed off and she finally was promoted to one of the head producers. This job could help her reach her dreams of becoming one of the greatest song writer/music producer in the world.

"Oh come on, Auden, spill."

"I can't tell you, Emmie, seriously." Auden laughed at her friends antagonizing. Wishing she could tell her, but unable to breach the confidentiality agreement she signed.

Auden's Apple Watch chimed, reminding her of the recording session she had to attend in an hour.

"Let me guess, you have to go," Emmie said, giving her a knowing look.

"I have a session in an hour. But we can watch a movie together when I get home?" Auden was already getting up to leave. She slung her bag over her shoulder, and cradled her coffee in her hand.

"It's the least you can do after not admitting you're working with Justin Bieber."

"It's not Justin Bieber," Auden said, already halfway out the door.

"One of these days it will be!" Emmie called just as the door to the coffee shop closed behind her.
