"Explain yourself." The knife pressed against her throat, leaving absolutely no thought to the imagination of what would happen if the explanation was less than satisfactory. "I don't have a twin sister."
There were memories. Foriegn things implanted in her brain that didn't exist yesterday. If she was the sort to let herself listen to others, she might have even been lulled in by the compelling tale of growing up with a twin sister all this time.
To say that the young noble lady Cale Henituse was a contrary person would do a disservice to the word. Even a word as irreconcilable as contrary wouldn't want to be compared to the absolute stubborn streak that propelled her through life.
She wasn't merely contrary, she was at her very essence a being that defied.
When such a person was offered the simple narrative of accepting an aberrant existence into her life, she rioted. For any other person, and indeed this was true for all the others who had their memories touched up in this way, they would have felt a momentary discomfort. A sort of reverse deja vu. And then they would have accepted the aberrant change to their reality as an absolute fact.
No one else, not even one person, who had been convinced that Cale Henituse had a twin through the hand of god noticed even the slightest change.
Put simply, Cale was too pigheaded, obstinate, and headstrong to accept an easy lie that wouldn't harm her in the slightest.
This was pretty disadvantageous to her 'twin sister', one Roksu Henituse, who really didn't even want to be here to begin with.
Kim Rok Soo hadn't been a bad person. He'd lived his life the best that he could, lost a lot of people, gained others, and made it through his life with the hopes of just sort of getting by.
He was alive merely because he hadn't died yet.
And then he'd decided to read a trashy romance novel on his day off.
He really shouldn't have, it wasn't even his preferred genre, but he'd seen the heroine on the cover and thought she looked cool. It really wasn't deeper than that.
It was a very typical fantasy romance novel taking place in some western aristocracy. The plot was trite but the characters were likable and the heroine was at least somewhat atypical for the genre. She really wasn't all that helpless or weak and she was the one who rescued the prince more times than she was rescued.
Really, Kim Rok Soo sort of wished he could read an action novel where she was the protagonist. Her mixture of innocence, self-righteous anger, and merciless strength were compelling. She was exactly the type of protagonist he liked in his novels, the sort that grew on their heroes journey to achieve great goals.
Only, the 'great goal' in this novel was some bland prince who was portrayed as a little too perfect to be believable. Kim Rok Soo hadn't disliked the glib tongued prince, per say, he just didn't have any reason to really like his character. Next to the dynamic Choi Han, Prince Alberu just felt flat to him.
Perhaps there would have been more secrets revealed about his character or some tragic backstory that would have made him so much more compelling but Kim Rok Soo hadn't completed the series.
He really would have made sure to finish if he knew he'd wake up inside of it.
"I'm not going to ask twice."
The hissing voice of the woman warning him and holding a kitchen knife against his throat was also a bit of a puzzle for Kim Rok Soo.
Cale Henituse was the villainess.
