“Elle dear?” I hear my mother ask as she walks in.
“How could you?”
“How could I what?” she looks genuinely confused.
“How could you agree for me to marry him of all people?”
“You mean you’re not happy about it?”
“Of course I’m not! I can’t stand that guy!”
“Well it would be stupid of you not to marry him whether you like him or not.”
“I don’t want to be stuck with someone I don’t like for the rest of my life mom.”
“Well would you rather starve? Actually, don’t answer that. I’m disappointed in you Elle, you’ve always had better manners. What’s gotten into you lately?”
“I’m not trying to be disrespectful, it’s just, I don’t know. I want to be happy.”
“Happiness is no longer an option for us sweetie.”
I begin to respond but she’s probably right. What am I going to do, wait for prince charming to come along? There’s no such thing. I don’t know what it was like for 19 year old girls before everything went bad but all there seems to be anymore is sadness. It’s nice to have Anna as a friend and all but she’s under the same impression that everyone else is, that everything is just grand and lovely, but it’s not.
I hear a knock on the door and begin to go to my room, knowing it’s probably someone to congratulate me. But before I can get that far the door swings open, it’s Phillip. You see, that’s just how arrogant he is, he doesn’t feel it necessary to wait for a response, he just knocks and enters people’s homes.
“There you are,” he says, smiling at me. I swallow. “Come out into the light with me Elle, I’d like to chat.”
My mom gives me that look mothers tend to give that says, “You’d better do it or else!”
It’s not that Phillip isn’t attractive, he is very handsome. He has shaggy golden brown hair and big green eyes. He has think muscles and the cutest smile, but what’s all that if all he can talk about is himself?
I allow Phillip to lead me out into the daylight and to a small garden bench. I look at him, waiting to see what it is he wants to say but he just leans his face toward mine.
“What are you doing?” I yell as I flinch back.
“Well we’re engaging now, until we’re officially engaged we can do this.” Engaging is the time period right before a man and woman get engaged where they’re getting to know each other and whatnot.
“But I don’t want to do this!”
He looked confused.
I’ve already had enough of this, I get up and begin to walk away.
“Where are you going?” I hear him ask.
“Somewhere other than here.”
X
“So he really tried to kiss you?” Anna asked me the next day while we’re out picking berries.
I nod.
“So why didn’t you let him? It’s just a kiss!”
“Because Anna, if I allow him to do something like that then he will think it’s alright to do it whenever, and it’s not.”
“It will be once you’re married.”
“I’m not marrying him.”
“Then who are you going to marry?”
