My stomach drops and my blood runs cold. I thought I’d gone in the right direction but this explains why this fallen tree looked so familiar. “Come, quick, get on my back! I have to get you out of here!” He tosses the canteen into the backpack and zips it up then turns for me to get on his back.

Instead of grabbing the pack, or getting on his back, I turn and run straight for the house. It’s stupid, I know, but I go anyway.

“Elle! What are you doing!” Within half a second he’s in front of me and I slam right into his chest. Not fair!

“I can’t just let them tear down your house!” I duck under his arm and start running again. I know he can catch me in a millisecond but I’m going to be stubborn about this.

Once again he jumps in front of me and I slam into his hard chest, ow! I sigh loudly and give him an irritated look.

“Is there any way I can talk you out of this?”

“No.”

Now it’s his turn to sigh. “Okay. Well, I’m not just going to hand you over to them.”

“They have guns! You can’t fight them!”

“Your lack of faith in me is almost insulting.”

“You can’t fight bullets, can you?”

“No, but it won’t matter. I’m too fast for them to shoot me.”

I hear someone shout from the front side of the house. “We’d better get going,” I say as I turn and start again at the house, but once again he stops me, this time by grabbing my arm.

He ignores my irritated look, “Stay here until I come back, I’ll take care of them, wait here!” He turns and sprints towards the house and disappears so fast it’s hard to tell but I think he ran up and onto the roof but the screaming I hear a moment later insures me the villagers have seen him.

I begin running towards the house, too bad I can’t run and climb and jump like he can. I run through the back sliding glass door into the ‘music room’. As I make my way towards the doors I hear someone calling my name and figure out who as soon as I slam into him in the doorway, Shane.

“Elle! There you are! Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, the better question is are you okay?”

He shrugs, “My back hurts but I’ve been too worried about you to let it bother me too much.”

“How bad did they whip you?”

“We can talk about that later, right now your monster friend is-“

“He’s not a monster.”

“Well, whatever he is-“

“He’s just a human Shane…”

“Humans aren’t 100 feet tall with teeth that big and claws.”

“He’s not even close to 100 feet and he’ll only use the claws to defend himself or me, don’t you see? If he’s so bad then why am I okay after having spent so much time with him? Why hasn’t he clawed or killed me? Why has he fed me, and given me clothes and a shower and a bed? Monsters don’t play the piano so beautifully you dream about it!”

“Oh my god…”

“What!?”

“You love him.”

“What? No, no we’re just friends.”

“You’re blushing, and getting all squirmish, you never do that, you totally are in love with the beast!”
