As I walk back to the village, I can’t help but think how strange this whole thing is. The beast isn’t scary at all, or at least he doesn’t seem like it. But if he isn’t dangerous or bad, then why is the whole world scared of him, yet they want him on their side to fight? Unless maybe he is dangerous, he just isn’t towards me. But then why wouldn’t he be towards me? What’s so special about me that he doesn’t feel compelled to lash out at me? Nothing.
Could it be possible that the rest of the world is wrong? That just doesn’t seem likely enough, no, it has to be me. Maybe this is how he works, he gets you to trust him, then he attacks when you least expect it. Yeah, that’s got to be it.
But, he just had me alone in his… house, and he wouldn’t even let me go near him. He actually seemed like he was scared of me, except that doesn’t make sense either, I’m not even remotely intimidating.
He’s not as big as I expected either. Sure, he’s tall, but not to a ridiculous extent. And he’s muscular, really muscular. I wonder what he does all day alone in that huge mansion, I’m guessing by the size of his arms he works out a lot.
Then there’s those eyes, the kind of eyes you can swim in, they go so deep; they’re intense. And the soft fur covering his whole body, it’s not gross and tough as I’d thought it would be, it looks soft. Also, I can’t help but wonder, why would a ‘beast’ as he is wear sweat pants? Weird.
Before I know it I’m back in the village, which is even more vacant as earlier today. I hadn’t realized I’d been gone so long, the clock in the center reads it’s going on 5 pm, I’m starving!

A tapping noise on my window wakes me up. I roll over with a groan, but the tapping continues, the annoying sound growing louder. I groggily swing my legs over and onto the floor then stand up. Who could it be?
When I push the sheet hanging over my window to the side, I see Shane smiling at me through the glass. He waves gingerly and I push the window open.
“What are you doing here at midnight?” I ask him crankily.
“I didn’t see you when you got back earlier, just wanted to see if you were okay. Can I come in?”
I nod and stroll back over to my welcoming bed. Good thing it’s midnight and everyone’s asleep, I would be in so much trouble if I got caught with a boy in my room that I wasn’t engaging with, especially since I’m supposed to be engaging with someone else who thank god isn’t in town.
“So where’d you go anyway?” Shane asks casually, but I hear a hint of something else in there, concern maybe?
“I can’t tell you.”
“Please?” His blue eyes are so hard to resist when he gives me the puppy face.
I groan, “If I do, you have to swear to me you won’t tell anyone! Not even Anna.”
“Anna doesn’t even know?”
“No,” I shake my head, “She has a tendency to tell everyone’s business, especially to Phillip right now and that’s the last thing I need.”
“So what is it? Where did you go?”
I take a deep breath, he’s not going to like this one bit. “I went to see the beast.”
“What!?”
“Shh! If we get caught we’re both dead!”
“And if you get caught sneaking out there or going there in the first place you’ll be dead. Are you stupid? I always thought you were smarter than this Elle.”
