I doodle music notes on the edge of my notebook as the teacher drones on about solving for x. I listen to the quiet ticking of the clock, waiting for the bell to ring. It's Thursday. The school week is almost over, and I didn't sleep much last night, so I just want to go home. I lay my head on the desk for a second, like I can nap a while real quick without my teacher noticing. He notices.
"Jiro, are you paying attention?" he asks.
"Yes sir," I say, trying to keep the yawn out of my voice.
I'm twelve, and just starting middle school. And man, it's much harder than grade school already. Ten minutes of struggling to pay attention later, the bell rings, and I run out of class. We have a half day today, thank god. I go rushing down the hall and out of the school building. My neighborhood is not far from the junior high, so I walk home. My friend Finn runs up behind me.
"Heeeeyyyy! Wait up Ky!" they call.
I don't really feel like talking right now, I just wanna go home, but Finn is my friend regardless, so I slow down so they can catch up to me.
Finn has ice blue eyes, pale skin with brown freckles, and reddish, strawberry-blonde hair. They're very pretty in my opinion. I wonder who their soulmate is. They have two teal marks under their right eye. Whoever it is is lucky, Finn is a nice person and a loyal friend.
"Hey Ky, check it out!" they say, holding up their hands.
Their nails are painted in yellow, white, purple, and black on one hand, and pink, yellow, and blue on the other hand. It's the non-binary and pansexual flags. So pretty!
"Ooo so pretty!" I squeal, then quieter, "Could you do mine sometime?"
"Yea sure, what color?" they ask.
"Oh I dunno," I say innocently, twirling a strand of hair around my finger, "maybe white with shades of pink and orange."
At first, Finn just stares at me, then realization dawns on their face, their eyes widening in shock.
"Ky, are you..."
"Finn I think I'm gay," I blurt.
Finn squeals and hugs me tight, crushing me and jumping up and down.
"Oh my god Kyyyyyy! Welcome to the club!" they cry.
"Haha thanks. I'm still figuring it out, but all my friends like boys, and... I like girls sometimes, so..." I say.
"Yep! That's certainly a sign of something," says Finn, "You'll figure it out. Give it time, you will,"
Finn gives me a loving look as we walk up to my house.
"Do you want to do your nails now? Or when?" Finn asks.
"Ahh, I didn't get much sleep last night, so I'm really tired. How about tomorrow, to start off the weekend?" I ask.
"Sounds good! Now I better get home! Bye Ky!" says Finn as they run off towards their house.
"Bye! Thanks for the talk Finn!" I say.
I'm glad they were the first to know.
"Anytime!"
As I walk into my house I greet my mom, telling her that I'm tired and I'm going upstairs. I lay on my bed and look up at the ceiling. If I'm gay, does that mean my soulmate... will be a girl? I always just said they, because you never know, but does this mean my soulmate is a she? That's cool. But, what if that day at the gardens was my chance? I was just looking for the wrong person. My markings haven't glowed since and sometimes I worry that they never will again. I know that's silly, but it's not impossible, and I can't keep myself from thinking it sometimes. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to be patient.
