6 - Closer

Jiro POV

    It's been a couple months since the glow at the market, and nothing too exciting has happened since. The whole thing with Grandmother and the great-aunt I never knew I had blew over, and I've been happy. Now, I'm super excited. Excited and terrified. Because today is my first day of high school! Maybe I'll find my soulmate. I have to find out! Now, what to wear. Nothing too fancy, or too casual, or just too... anything. I want to look nice, but I definitely don't want to be seen as the "too much" kid. I want to blend in a little while I look for my soulmate. Finally, I pick out black jeans, a loose purple t-shirt with a little picture of a crow, it's wings outstretched, at the top corner, and a white zip up jacket with a little pin on the chest on one side. The pin is of a little dragon, its scales the colors of the lesbian flag. Satisfied at last with my outfit, I grab my brand new dark blue backpack with my books and supplies inside, my phone, and a pair of earbuds and go crashing down the stairs. My mom is making pancakes- wait! I glance the time, I'm going to be late!

    "Mom!" I yell, "I'm gonna be late!"

    "Oh no!" she says, "Well, here. You best get going now!"

    She gives me a hug and hands me a chocolate chip pancake wrapped in a napkin.

    "Thanks Mom! Bye!"

    "Bye Kyoka! Have a good day and good luck!" she calls as I run out the door.

    Denki meets me outside.

    "Hey Kyo!" he calls.

    "Hey," I say, "You ready?"

    "Define ready," he says gulping.

    "Seriously," I say back.

    I definitely feel that. Seeing Denki looking at me with puppy eyes, I give him some of my pancake.

    "You're the best Kyo," he says, getting chocolate on his face as he eats the fluffy pancake.

    It is really good.

    "I know," I say.

    Me and Denki are not just attending any school. We are attending a prestigious private high school, UA high. Intimidating? Yes. Exciting? Also yes. I just wish Finn could be here with us. I met Finn on one of my first days of junior high, and the second semester of that year Denki started hanging out with us too, after we'd grown apart years earlier when he switched to a different grade school. After that the three of us were inseparable, but now me and Denki are going to UA while Finn is just going to a regular public high school. I hope they'll be ok. Damn, I hope the same for us. I can't help but be nervous and I know Denki is too. We're a little incomplete without Finn. But we still have each other.

    As soon as we step into the school building, Denki's markings begin to glow. I gape. This is his first time.

    "Oh my god Denki!" I say, trying to keep my voice down.

    We squeal quietly. But Denki is looking at me, and that's when I notice that mine are glowing as well. Do both of our soulmates go to this school? Nothing has ever felt so perfect. We take a minute, but we finally find our classroom. Class 1-A. Huh. Why does that title feel so important? We slip inside and are met with the loud chatter of the students already there. There are little post-it notes on each desk to help us find our assigned seats. I arrive at mine only to find that Denki is right next to me. Way to go! What luck. This day is going well so far.

    Once it's time for class to start we begin to wonder where the teacher is. Then, I see something in the corner. It looks like a gigantic banana slug. Wait, what? Why is there... wait! The banana slug begins to move, shedding its outer casing and inside is... our teacher? A man stands there. He wears black clothes with a gray scarf, and his hair is unkempt. He has an unshaven face and red, tired eyes. He must be our teacher. Banana slug man steps to the front of the class.
