For spies, Peter found his parents to be unbelievably obvious.
That might also be because they'd both spoken to him, and Wanda could read minds.
But still.
Maria had taken him and Wanda out for coffee - that was the first indicator. Peter wasn't allowed coffee. By the end of his latte (with three pumps of honeycomb syrup) he was bouncing off the walls and could barely concentrate on what had Maria so nervous. Wanda, luckily, could handle caffiene and got the older agent to open up.
"I want to ask your mother to marry me," she'd muttered in one breath. He only heard because of his super hearing. He'd learnt, since they'd asked him about adopting Wanda, to be more calm in these situations. Which is why an unmanly squeal didn't half deafen his sister. She'd argue otherwise but Peter insisted he'd been the poster child for calm and collected. "Can I take that as a yes?" Maria asked.
"I'm so glad you're finally gonna marry Mama. Can I give her away?"
"I think, if she says yes, either Clint or Yelena will give her away."
"Right, of course, can I-"
"I'm going to ask Fury."
"Mum, how could you do this to me? Your son, the hotshot, the hero, the man, the myth, the legend!" He announced dramatically, one hand on his chest and one protruded into the air.
"Okay, too far bud." She rolled her eyes. Wanda was pretending she didn't know him.
"Right. But I can't believe you'd get married and not let me be part of the wedding party."
"Who said that? You're still our son. Of course you'll be involved. If she says yes."
"Can I help with the wedding planning?" Wanda asked, calmly sipping her mocha, though her leg was bouncing in exitement.
"I haven't even got a ring yet guys, let alone got her to agree to marry me."
"Well of course she'll marry you, she adopted a kid with you already," he pointed at Wanda, "and then there's me. The better one." Wanda pushed him. He fell out of his chair and onto the floor making her laugh so hard she spilt chocolate coffee down her top. He laughed too hard at that to be able to stand up.
"Guys, please," Maria begged.
"Sorry," Wanda sighed. "Well, we have to rectify that." She shrugged, patting napkins on her lap to futily try to nullify the damage,
"What?"
"You said you don't have a ring yet," Peter supplied, typically on the same wavelength as his sister.
"Oh, um, well-"
"We'll go now! There's a jewelery store down the road. I'd call Yelena but she's terrible at keeping secrets from Mama." Peter was half way out the door before anyone could stop him.
"Excuse my brother, he gets clinically insane on coffee," Wanda laughed and followed Peter out. Maria sighed, rolled her eyes at her kids, and followed them out.
Three days later, Natasha took them out for a pastry and walk around the park.
"Maria's going to propose. How do your two feel about that?" She asked, fiddling with the paper bag around her danish pastry.
"That's great, right? We'll legally be a family," Peter offered, keeping himself in check.
"How do you feel about it?" Wanda asked, nudging Natasha gently.
"Annoyed."
"What?" Peter burst, stumbling over his own feet in his haste to grab Natasha and shake some sense into her.
"I'd just brought her a ring and started planning and now she's doing the same. I'll have to change my plans so I can beat her to it." Peter let out a huge breath, physically deflating.
"Wait, you're going to propose to her?" Wanda asked, kicking Peter to get ahold of himself.
"Yes, I've wanted to for a while."
"That's great-"
"So when is she planning to do it?"
"Huh?"
"Oh come on, I know you both know."
"Okay, so we might have had an idea that she was thinking about proposing-"
"Cut the bull Wands, she took you guys out and Peter came back looking like a puppy on crack. She gave him coffee, which means she was nervous when you were out, which means she asked you if you are okay with it. The sweet idiot."
"Fine, you caught us, but we won't help either of you ruin the other's plans. We won't get involved at all, all we did was give our blessing and now we're keeping out of it," Wanda said firmly.
"We helped her choose the ring."
"Peter!" Wanda slapped a hand over his mouth. "We don't know more than that. We're innocent bystanders. And on that note, you stand here while we yell," she dragged Peter off by his face, "byyyyyyeeee!" Peter mimicked her, though it came out muffled. Then they ran away.
"Why did I have kids?"
Later that night, Peter accosted Natasha in the shower. Or she'd say that anyway. He walked in blindfolded so he wouldn't scar himself again and kept his back to her, just in case.
"Peter! Out!"
"I have information to give you and it needs to be somewhere the other two won't hear."
"Fine. What is it?" She sighed, used to her stubborn son's antics.
"Maria's going to propse next Saturday when Yelena's in town. She wants you to be able to celebrate with her." Natasha smiled. Her boy very rarely manages to hide things from her, not through lack of ability but though his own conscience. They'd promised no lies and nothing hidden when he was only a small kid. Seemed that policy had stuck.
"Why are you telling me this?" She questioned, not because she didn't want to know, but because she wanted to understand her son's motives behind betraying Maria.
"Wanda's the one that doesn't want us to get involved. And I get it, I agree that we shouldn't ruin either of your plans. But you're my Mama, for so long we only had each other. I want you to be happy and I know how much this means to you." He'd never been great at verbally expressing his emotions, especially since the event that led to him and Maria becoming close. Not that he'd ever hidden them, just not spoken about them. To hear him try was an emotional moment for Natasha, especially given what he was talking about.
"Oh Pete, my sweet boy. You've always had such a big heart."
"Just, um, can you try not to ruin her plans? She's trying so hard and her idea is so sweet."
"I promise Pete, I'll let her propose. I'll just bring the ring I got her with me." Peter sighed, like a weight had been taken off his shoulders. "What does she have planned?"
"No, I won't spoil anything else. You'll love it though."
The week went by, Wanda and Peter barely contained their giggles every time they saw the two women together.
Eventually the day came, and they had plans of their own.
Maria proposed privately, just the two of them. She'd kept their kids involved through the whole process, but they all agreed that this moment should just be the two of them. Peter wished he'd been able to hear the speech, see his mothers' reactions. Wondered what his Mama said, if she ratted him out or just smiled smugly when Maria no doubt asked how she'd known.
The second they walked through the door to where their family waited to celebrate, huge grins and stunning rings in place, Peter threw handfuls of glitter covered confetti at them both. Wanda doing the same on the other side of the door way. Natasha laughed goodnaturedly, as she always had when he'd deemed them gross and thrown glitter at them. Maria reached for him and tickled his ribs mercilessly, until both were laughing, panting and sprawled on the floor.
"Well?" Yelena demanded. "Did she say yes?" Her radiant smile and light eyes took away from the teasing comment. Natasha hugged her.
"I'm getting married," she sighed, holding Yelena tight.
"I'm proud of you," Yelena offered, holding just as tight. Maria and Peter smiled from their place on the floor. Wanda jumped on them, tackling them with a hug.
Later, Peter and MJ sat on the balcony, taking a break from the jovial celebrations inside.
"You think we'll ever be like your parents?" MJ asked, leaning her shoulder against his.
"I really hope so. I want you in my life forever." MJ turned to look him in the eye, a small smile on her face. "Can I kiss you?"
"Pete, you really don't have to ask." He leant forward, eyes closed. Just as their lips were about to meet, he felt something soft and itchy trickle down his head.
"What the?" He brushed a hand over his hair, and before he could even look at what it was he heard cackling from just behind him.
"I have been waiting years for revenge Pete, and it tastes oh so sweet." Maria has an empty cup in hand, and Peter was covered head to toe in bright pink glitter.
The end.
