No one had paid attention to the guy with the flat cap as he exited the plane. Thanks to his suitcase, he wasn't standing out. The man simply looked like an ordinary traveler. But if anyone would've been able to see or hear the Egyptian god next to him, the situation would've played out very differently.
Following the stream of people, he worked his way through the airport, making sure to turn away from the cameras without risking the attention of the security guards. The man was wanted in more countries than he'd like to and being arrested now would only interfere with his plans.
Their plans.
He still had to get used to his new situation.
It wasn't every day that an Egyptian god as annoying as Khonshu asks you to become his avatar. And even though the man knew he hadn't been the god's first choice, he took on the job. It was the only way for him to protect his brothers and to make sure they could finally live the life they deserved. Not that they would ever find out whom he was or what he was doing for them.
As he left the airport building, the noisiness and stench of the streets welcomed him. Weirdly enough, he realized how much he missed it. During the past few weeks he had been to other metropolises, like London or Cairo, but they were different from his hometown. He barely went out back then. The man couldn't exactly remember the when and why, but at some point his companions and he had ended up in a small town near the alps. They got into a fight. A nasty one.
He came to New York because he had to hunt down the followers of the goddess Ammit and her avatar Arthur Harrow. Even though these two were dead, their movement wasn't.
"This city stinks."
The man tried to not roll his eyes. During the whole flight, Khonshu had done nothing but complain. The plane had been too small, too crowded and too slow, the old woman next to him had been too smelly and the screaming child in the back had made him want to scratch his brains out. Like it or not, the man agreed.
Of course, Khonshu could have easily flown him over the Atlantic by using his powers, but the man had refused. The Egyptian god didn't need to know that he, Jake Lockley, was afraid of heights. It was a mystery to him how Khonshu could oversee his hands clinging to his seat or his face turning as white as a sheet of paper.
But now they were on the ground again and Jake tried to calm down a little. He took a deep breath and turned his head to look at the night sky. Khonshu silently followed his gaze. The starless blackness above their heads caused them both to feel a little lonely and sad; something they were never gonna admit to each other.A few moments passed, in which neither of them spoke or moved. They simply stood next to each other, eyes towards the sky, forgetting about the busy city around them.
Jake would be the first to eventually snap back to reality. While readjusting his scarf, he mentally checked on Steven and Marc. He could feel them in the back of his head. They had been quiet today and were hopefully asleep by now. It made it easier for him to stay in control.
After Jake had made the deal with Khonshu, he created a mental wall, behind which he would lock Marc and Steven up, to prevent them from finding out the truth. So far it worked, but he knew he had to find a permanent solution for their problem.
"Are they waking up?"
Jake forced his attention back on Khonshu, who had been watching him closely during his check-up.
"No."
"But you fear they will."
Jake swallowed down a laugh. Of course, he did. Of course, he feared that Steven and Marc would wake up. He didn't even dare to imagine their reaction to them suddenly being in New York instead of London, even worse: with Khonshu by their side, again.
But he wouldn't say that out loud, not to the pigeon. Instead, he tugged his jacket even tighter, before grabbing his bag and turning to leave."You know you'll need a plan for when they wake up."
Jake paused mid-step.
Yeah, he knew that. But like it or not, they had other problems right now. He would simply have to maintain the wall between him and them for as long as possible. Jake started walking again. Looking over his shoulder he answered to Khonshu." I've got it covered."
Without another word, he turned his head forward, leaving the god alone in midst the oblivious crowd."Funny", Khonshu added before poofing out. "That's what Marc said too."
